Announcing the Release of Dead Man's Hand (Jack of Spades #4)
The latest book in the Pulp Friction 2015 Altered States Universe is now available at

Have you been following the tale of ghostly river boat gambler Barton Montoire and Professor Sabine Brusilov?

In this episode, Barton Montoire, the ghost of a nineteenth century riverboat gambler, is devastated and angry. His lover, physics professor Sabine, has exorcised him. Again. This time, there's no denying the professor's actions were intentional. Worse, Bart can't seem to convince their friends to aid him in his quest get Sabine to listen to his side of things.

With his lover Bart safe from shadowy threats of eternal damnation in the "other realm," ghost hunter Sabine Brusilov is free to pursue his own risky investigation into the mysterious circlet and its connection to the shadow figure that's been tormenting the unlikely couple. With the help of his friends, he determines to take control of the situation and bring Bart home.

EXCERPT:
The smell of old books…of centuries-old paper, aromatic ink, and ancient leather hung heavy in the air of the archive. The door closed behind him, locking him in with the most arcane media library inexistence. Shelves lined the climate controlled room. Archive quality acid free boxes lined the bottom row, sealed tubes protected maps, charts, and scrolls more ancient than freedom were stored in large bins. The rest…books…fat, thin, tall, small…were crammed into every shelf in a sort of general organization. Sabine pulled on a pair of latex gloves from a box on a table near the door.
“Where to start today?” Sabine had been working his way through the shelf labeled Daemonolgy for the past week. Before that he’d read through the section on Spiritulus. He strolled the shelves, looking for inspiration. “Thaumaturgy? Alchemy? Mirandus?”
Mirandus? Translating the Latin quickly, he came up with something. “Wonderful? Marvelous?” On impulse, he selected two volumes from the shelf, one a pedestrian-looking thing with a cloth cover less than an inch thick, and the other a heavy tome with an odd, leather cover that smelled of must and something… “Good a place to start as any.”
Placing the two books on the small table, he drew out a chair and seated himself. The slender volume proved to be a book on fairies. Useless. He pushed it aside and opened the thicker book with the thin leathery covering. Surprisingly, it was handwritten. The first page was inscribed in a fairly childish hand with the words, Cassius, his booke.
The following pages were written in Latin, with small drawings and numerous lists. “A book of lists?” Pulling a notebook and pencil from his pocket, Sabine selected a list at random and began the laborious process of translating. He referred occasionally to his iPhone for words that he didn’t recall.
“Unbelievable.” He stared at the results. “It looks like…”
He pushed the paper away and picked up his phone. “Laurent?”
“Sabine! It’s good to hear from you.”
“Uh…are you wearing your pants?”
The husky chuckle down the line might once have stirred his senses. But it seemed Laurent was learning the fine art of directing his sexual energies at specific targets. Either that or the distance added some protection. “I am fully clothed, but willing to rectify that situation, if it suits you.”
“No…er… What do you think of this?” He drew in a calming breath. When had his heart begun to hammer like that? “A pinch of dried birch bark, powdered fine. The milk of the spiky yellow flower, root of garlic, crushed. In a stone bowl, grind to a paste with acid of grape. Apply to affliction and cover.”
“You have a wart problem?”
“It’s a spell?” Had he really stumbled upon a spell book?
“More like an herbal cure, but… Where are you?”
Blinking, Sabine flipped a few pages deeper into the book. The lists grew longer, the accompanied script more voluminous. “Moonshadows, why?”
“I just popped into your place… Can’t say as I like what you’ve done with the place. I take it poker is elsewhere this week?”
“No. I’m hoping that poker will be right there. So this is an herbal remedy? How would I tell a spell book if I saw one?” Like Laurent would know. Was it really a spell that he needed?
“As opposed to someone’s great-grandma’s recipe book? Well, they might have an odor of sulfur. Haha. Just kidding. But generally a spell book is personal to the witch or mage it belongs to. Depends on what they practiced…how they learned… Why? What have you found? If it’s at Moonshadows, it’s probably just junk. Now, if you’ve a hankering to see a real spell book… Come on down to my place on the bayou and I can show you a page or two rumored to be written in Marie Laveau’s own hand.”
“Marie Laveau, the voodoo queen? Is this the punchline to another joke?”
“No. Really. You’ve heard the story of Handsome Jack?”
“That’s just a song and a lot more recent than the 1800s.”
“Well, some songs have their basis in urban legend, and some legends have their basis in fact.”
“Are you saying—”
“I’m not saying that an incubus seduced a voodoo queen in exchange for a fortune in Confederate gold… Because we don’t kiss and tell, but…I do have a few pages of a genuine spell book if you want to take a look at one for comparison. If you can’t come out to the bayou, I’ll bring them to poker.”
The line went dead, and Sabine sat lost in thought for a minute. His friend had a more colorful past than he’d expected. The spell book would definitely be interesting to see.
He returned his attention to the book in front of him, strangely unwilling to give up on it just yet. Turning to a clean page in his notebook, he re-opened the Latin dictionary on his phone and went back to work. Flipping forward more, he stopped again on a page with a strange illustration of a leaf and a platter. Shivering, he touched the drawing of the platter with one fingertip. It was familiar. Using the photo search option on his phone, he was able to identify the leaf as belonging to the yew tree. Interesting. The tree of the dead. This might be worth the time. He turned from the illustration to the text. The language had changed, as had the handwriting. The letters were more mature, but the words unrecognizable. He typed the first word into Google translator then hit detect language.
Nothing. Damn.
Sighing, he continued paging through the book, pausing as he noted a section once more in Latin. The facing page listed several items, but it was the illustration that caught his attention. An oblong platter, a tripod, a circlet, and again the yew leaves. The pieces were so familiar. A chill crept over him, skin crawling as his heart hammered in excitement.
The title at the top of the facing page reinforced his hopes. Summonitori spirituum. Summoner of spirits. This might be what he was looking for. If he could recall the spirits of the dead from the afterlife…he could bring Bart home. “When the time is right.” For now, he needed to learn what this creature of darkness wanted, and…it was beginning to look like what it wanted was passage into the human world. Summoner. He made a note to scan the book for other uses of the word.
Picking up his pencil, Sabine began translating again.

Pulp Friction 2015: Altered States

Presents

Jack of Spades #2

Dead Blind

In the two months since Dr. Sabine Brusilov and his ghostly lover Bart discovered the curious brass circlet while investigating a haunting in an apartment building, Sabine focused on recovering from his accident. Now, his health restored, his mind returns to the mystery of the circlet. Even a commission to appear on a television show can’t distract him from its allure.

After nearly two centuries of resistance, it takes an exorcism for Bart to come to terms with being a ghost…and learning that everything in the other realm isn’t quite the way he had figured. As he grows more comfortable in the spirit plane, his abilities on the earthly plane evolve. Even though he feels the circlet’s evil, he can’t help but connect his growing strength with it.

Life and death are two sides of the same coin, but the circlet blurs lines for both man and ghost

EXCERPT
A fan of red and black cards lay on the scarred tabletop…smoke and laughter and raucous piano music tainted the air. Every fiber of his being focused on the neat little derringer held oh so casually in an elegant white hand.
“Let’s not be hasty.” The scarlet-clad tart clutched at her lover’s shoulder, wrinkling the black fabric of his coat.
“He’s a cheat.” The man’s attention never wavered. “I can’t abide a cheat.”
“You keep it.” Bart gestured negligently at the pile of bills and coins in the center of the table. “No hard feelings.” The money was his…legitimately won. A year ago the slur on his honor would have had him reaching for his own piece, but now, he’d learned life was more valuable than honor.
“You know.” The gambler leaned forward, dark eyes glittering maliciously. “I think I will.”
His heart tripped in long, slow, painful thumps, sweat ran like ice cold rain along his back. Bart stared down the barrel of that pistol…and even though he expected it, the sound of its report shocked him.
“Fuck.” The painful thumps burst outward…spears of fire raced through his veins. He might have screamed…he definitely cursed. Scattered in a hundred directions at once, pulling back together, seeking something to anchor him, to draw on. In the all-encompassing darkness, he found it…a pinprick of light, of familiarity. Ignoring the cluster of brightness that called to him most strongly, knowing that cluster represented Sabine, represented a home grown uncomfortable. Zeroing his consciousness on the chosen spot, Bart didn’t care where it took him, as long as it was somewhere where his own death didn’t whisper to him so pervasively. Since Sabine’s accident, he hadn’t been able to escape that constant, chiding reminder of mortality.
“Fuck.” His atoms coalesced again…coming together more solidly than he’d planned. Where was he? Somewhere not Sabine’s apartment. Somewhere that held its own darkness, but more the darkness of sorrow than the strange unsettling feeling that seemed to have followed them home from Mrs. Carew’s apartment.
“What am I supposed to do with this?”
Jet’s voice… He’d found the wolf in the frenzy of darkness. The Alpha sat slumped over a desk littered with paper and ledgers of some kind. His strong dark fingers clutched Bart’s pocket watch tightly. He bore very few reminders of the battle for pack leadership that Bart had witnessed two weeks earlier, rapid healing was apparently a boon to the curse of the wolf.
Not that Jet or any of his family seemed to consider being wolfen a curse. From the perspective of death, Bart could well believe that it was, in fact, a blessing.
A hundred seventy-five years ago, had he possessed the agility and instinct of the wolf, he might not have ended up at the bottom of the river.
“I can…sense you, you know.” The wolf didn’t raise his head, but Bart, whose senses seemed to have sharpened along some sixth plane not related to sight, sound, or hearing…since technically he supposed he couldn’t actually do any of those things anymore, was aware that the man’s heart rate had increased, that his nostrils flared, that he was exercising an iron control over his emotions and responses.
Garnering some control of his own, Bart called on a newfound talent and materialized completely. “I didn’t know that you could. So, last week…”
“You were on the hill above the encampment, then spent a good twenty minutes sitting in a tree. If you weren’t already dead, I’d have been tempted to kill you myself. What good did they think it would do? Or was it sheer nosiness? Did the self-proclaimed paranormal expert want to know how the wolves choose a leader?”
Pure emotion rolled off the wolf…anger and hurt and that deep abiding sorrow that Bart himself had never felt, alive or dead. For a man whose own downfall had been his blindness to the emotions of others, it was unusual and unnerving to Bart to pick up on these feelings. Even stranger, though less unsettling, was that Bart understood those emotions. Jet was angry, and in pain…and like a wild creature, lashing out. This man was so intense, so primal in his emotions. “Sabine didn’t think you’d notice me.”
“I might not have noticed you, if I hadn’t had this in my possession.” Jet finally sat upright, the watch dangling from his big hand. “Their intentions were pure, I’m certain.” His glance became sharply disapproving. “But misguided.”
“They wanted me to report back…I guess they thought Laurant could intervene if necessary. I don’t know. I do know that if I’d had a group of friends like that, well…I might not have spent the better part of two centuries at the bottom of a river.” Having had enough of the uncomfortable emotions, Bart crossed the room and sat gingerly on a spindly straight-backed chair. He looked around the gloomy space with interest. Several boxes of liquor were stacked in corners, a few chairs with broken bits were shoved against a wall. The spider that wove that web must have been a long-time resident. “Where are we?”
“My office at Fangs. Why are you here?” Jet dropped the watch on the desk where it clattered. Bart reached out and touched it…really touched it for the first time since his death. The metal retained the heat of the Alpha’s body. The watch itself felt alive.
Snatching his hand back, Bart shrugged, amazed he could feel embarrassment still. “Well, I…um…”
“Did you come to take it back?” Jet nudged the watch closer. “Go ahead. Sabine says it won’t do what I wanted it for anyway.”
“No.” He shook his head regretfully. The watch was special, and he’d have dearly loved to take it with him if he could, but… “I can’t. I… How much do you know about the way this works?”
Jet snorted, amusement chasing away some of the sorrow in his expression. “About as much as Sabine has told us. Which is probably a lot less than you know.”
“I’m not really here. So when I leave, I can’t take anything with me. Where I go…it’s not physical. I can pull myself into the physical world, but I need a solid object with which I have an affinity to serve as an anchor.”
“The watch?”
“In this case, yes.” He sighed. “And I don’t know, really, why I’m here. I had a bit of a…accident. When I scattered, I pulled back to this plane, but I couldn’t go to Sabine’s, so I just… Usually I end up at the bottom of the river.” His resting place…so much of him was still there. “It draws me.”
“But not today?” Jet pushed back his chair and stood, bones creaking and snapping as he stretched. “Why couldn’t you go to Sabine’s? I didn’t call you here, did I?”
“Nah. I’ve been looking for him, you know.”
“Russ?”
He nodded. “Over there…it’s different. I haven’t found him, but I have learned that not everyone from here goes there.”
“That makes sense.” Jet’s eyes narrowed with interest. “Did you find any wolves there?”
“Well, no. But that doesn’t mean… I really only found about six individuals. Believe it or not, most of them don’t want any contact with each other. Paranoia seems to be a common problem.”
“That shyness Sabine mentions.” Jet hooked his hands in the pockets of his jeans and rocked for a minute. “You know, if you see him…”
“You have a message to pass?”
Strong white teeth dug into Jet’s fat lower lip, his eyes glinted suspiciously. “No. No message. Just… Have you ever been in a blood bar?” His head jerked toward the door.
Now that was a defense he recognized, one his own generation had grown up with. The polite lie, the deliberate ignorance. They both knew he’d been present weeks earlier, on game night, when Naked Twister had been firmly rejected, and they were both about to pretend that it had never happened, just so they could let the emotional moment go.
“Are you going to give me the grand tour?” He rose from his own chair, eager to accept any excuse not to go home, where for the first time since he’d moved in, he felt increasingly unwelcome.
“Yeah. I can do that. Just one thing.” Jet eyed him expectantly.
“What’s that?”
“How anchored are you? I just need to know if the rest of them can see you, or I’m going to look like a total loon talking to myself if I speak out loud.”

A Ghostly Story for the Season

 EXCERPT
Encounter

"What are you doing back here?" The slightly breathy, barely audible voice brushed like a caress along Trevor's tense nerves. A slight breeze blew Trevor's hair into his eyes as the stranger stepped from the shadows.
'Back here' was a dark secluded little alcove behind the wings of the drafty theater that Trevor had considered a safe place to steal a smoke and calm his nerves. Apparently it wasn't as unused as it appeared. He dropped the butt of his cigarette to the battered linoleum floor and ground it out with the heel of his boot. Smoking hadn't helped his nerves. Usually it did. His therapist claimed it was part of an oral fixation, related somehow to childhood neglect. Trevor found that difficult to believe, but then the therapist had yet to meet his over indulgent, too involved mother. He spent half his childhood in prayer for a little benign neglect.
He refused to stand up straight and act embarrassed though. He'd just stay right where he was, leaning comfortably against the dingy wall, looking casual, he hoped. Nausea still cramped his belly at the prospect of actually auditioning for a singing part in the Halloween musical. He waited a moment for a lecture on smoking in a public building. Nothing. Just patient silence.
Trevor narrowed his eyes and turned his head to flick a contemptuous gaze over the intruder. He raised his pierced brow in smooth interrogation. He'd spent hours practicing the technique in front of his bedroom mirror last year. Useful, suave and attractive, he hoped. The newcomer wasn't someone he'd ever met before, therefore probably not someone who belonged backstage either. He knew most of the people involved in the community theater one way or another. He'd spent the last seven years working on the sets and doing walk-on parts, after all. That changed this year.
He shifted slightly, rocking in place. The intruder was a very attractive someone, with a lithe muscular body poured into black skinny jeans and a tight black long sleeve tee. Pale, lovely classic features, deep dark eyes a guy could get lost in. If this kid could sing, Trevor faced stiff competition for the role he wanted. "Hi. I'm Trevor Adams." He licked his suddenly dry lips lightly. Another drafty little breeze stirred the hairs along his collarbone and he shivered a bit.
The dark eyes lit with a glitter of interest. The boy glided forward, strangely graceful, plump ruby lips stretched in a flirty smile. "I'm Caspar Thorpe. People don't usually see me back here. It's nice to meet you, Trevor." He extended a pale hand. Trevor wiped his own damp palm on his jeans and reluctantly took Caspar's hand. It was soft and cool in his grip, oddly soothing and he felt nearly as reluctant to release his grip on the hand as he'd been to take it in the first place.
"Are you trying out for the Haunted Theater performance?" Please don't say you want to be Vlad. Caspar intrigued him. Trevor found him incredibly attractive and didn't want to be put in a position of rivalry with him. The other man's words sank in slowly. Duh. If he's backstage and people don't usually see him, then he's not an actor, huh genius?
"No, no." Caspar shook his head slowly, "I'm more of a special effects guy. I do sound."
"Oh, so you're checking the acoustics?" Relieved that Caspar didn't plan to audition for the part he wanted, Trevor smiled slightly. Caspar glided with his odd graceful manner a little bit closer. Trevor's breath quickened a bit, his pulse raced.
"What about you? What are you doing here?" Caspar asked, his words a little more breathy. Trevor inhaled, desperately attempting to calm his senses. A light, teasing scent, earthy and fresh replaced the tobacco odor. Mmm, nice cologne Caspar wears.
Trevor's cheeks warmed a little. "Just searching for a place away from the crowd. This is my first audition and I'm a little nervous." Try a lot nervous, buddy.

Loving Jacob (insert pic)
When Malcolm Jenner’s sex-on-the-side turns into more, he isn’t above begging for a second chance.
Malcolm is looking for a bit of fun, nothing serious.  He's got duties and responsibilities, after all. He doesn’t usually choose his lovers from the office, but his attraction to Jacob Renault is too compelling to resist.
However,  Jacob isn't interested in temporary.  He wants it all, Prince Charming the castle, the happily ever after.  There's no rule that says he can't have fun while he's searching for his prince though.
At first neither is willing to compromise their stance, but an agreement is reached, with each man planning to do his best to subvert the other to his viewpoint.  Lust turns to love, and what’s impossible becomes merely improbable, but is it going to be enough?
Like that taste? Want to see more of how our heroes reached this point?

The Librarian
Valentine Michaels has just taken a vow of celibacy. Adrian Grey intends to take full advantage of that vow to re-create his relationship with Val.
Val is at a crossroads in his life. A college dropout, he's gone as far as he can in his career as a cosmetologist, owning his own style salon. He no longer finds satisfaction in it, though he's put years into proving to his bigoted parents that a college degree and the veneer of straightness aren't the only roads to success. They'd turned their backs on him, and he proved he didn't need them to make it.
His love life is no better than his working life. His relationships always start with a bang and fizzle into boredom, or worse, anger.
Adrian has his own agenda for helping Val: he's been in love with Val since they were freshmen. The intervening years of listening to Val's gossip about his lovers and relationships have taught Adrian just what it was he did wrong all those years ago, and he thinks this time around he now knows exactly how to get—and keep—his man.

Scary Movies

Scary Movies I don't watch with the lights off...or alone in the house...

I've never been one for blood and gore- I can't take the sight of a blade slicing through flesh, or any of the other gruesome stock in trade special effects of what passes for horror fiction these days, but I do enjoy being scared....

So in honor of the spirit of the season...Fear not Gore...I give you my favorite horror movies of all time...

1.  The Changeling

This one is a true ghost story. A guy moves into a house with the idea that he can write music and recover from his grief over the loss of his family. It doesn't take long for him to realize he's not alone in the house... This film includes some incredibly chilling scenes without a bit of gore. When that ball bounces down the stairs...my hair stands on end. I never watch this alone, and never watch it at night.

2. Dracula 1931

This is really close to the book, and that's one of the reasons that I really like it. It's spooky and creepy all by virtue of the story and not the gore. Bella Lugosi is a terrifyingly seductive vampire...

3. The Haunting

Like all good movies, this one has been remade. The original is better. Again it's based on a novel, but this time around, I can't recall the book, so I must have been more impressed with the movie. Dr. John Markway leads three others to a sinister mansion with a macabre past. Evil spirits dwell in the house though they aren't seen. The malevolence of the house itself is what terrifies. The spirits target one of the visitors, and scenes of chilling paranormal activity are frequent.

...A chill wind of fear, a ripple of unease that won't make you lose your dinner, and just might make you sigh a little ...okay, maybe my Encounter is more along the lines of Patrick Swayze in Ghost...romantic and sexy...Pick it up today, and I guarantee you'll find my ghost story entertaining...seductive...maybe a little chilling

ENCOUNTER: Ghosts, rockstars, ruthless businessmen...Encounter seduction.
