Flash Fiction: Every Note

Well, you might have known that I couldn't make it long without writing to a prompt...And of course, I dragged Havan along with me. This is a rather long flash, but I thought every word was needed. If you find any extraneous, don't tell me!

Prompt: "What are you doing here?"

Every Note
Copyright Jan 2013 © Lee Brazil

"What are you doing here?" Trey rolled over in the bed and pried one eye open. Yep. Jax lounged in the doorway in his usual, come and fuck me I'm home pose. In fact, he'd made himself so much at home that he'd already shed the disgraceful aged sandals he called footwear. Probably left them right inside the front door, where you can trip on them in the morning, Trey thought bitterly, letting his gaze roam hungrily over the lean figure slouched in front of him. Long dyed dark hair had been mussed by the wind, thin lips stretched in a hopeful smile, and damn it...it looked like the man had lost at least twenty pounds on this tour.
"The tour is over. Where else would I be?" Jax shrugged matter of factly.
Scrunching his pillow up and shoving it under his head, Trey sat up and glared, bleary eyed, at his ex, the rising star of the folk rock world. "We broke up before you went on this tour, or did you conveniently forget that?"
Jax rolled his eyes and strolled toward the bed, stripping off his tight band t-shirt and shucking his worn jeans. "That was just you being controlling and jealous. I know how your mind works. You wanted me to think about us while I was gone. It worked. I couldn’t get you out of my mind for the last three months."
If that could be interpreted as meaning that he hadn't been with anyone else, Trey would have scooted over and rolled Jax under him in a heart beat. Unfortunately, he knew better. "Right. In between all the glamour of life on a tour bus, you were thinking about me, about us, about life in a one bedroom apartment just barely on the right side of the tracks." He didn't even try to keep the sarcasm out of his voice. What was the point? Jax wasn't interested in the day to day minutiae of life and love. He wanted the sex, the companionship on his own terms, not the work.
"You painted the living room. The couch is three feet closer to the patio, that's a new coffee table, the plant your sister gave us when we moved in here two years ago seems to have spawned, and the picture of us at your graduation is missing from the end table." Jax knelt at the side of the bed. "Should I go on? I didn't check specifically, but I'd bet my cd's, movies, and books are all missing. The shelves looked a little skimpy. I'd have checked, but I was anxious to see you, you see."
Trey's jaw dropped in astonishment. "How long have you been here?"
"I've been watching you sleep, just for a minute or two. I wanted to store up the memory, just in case." Callused fingers stroked his exposed shoulder, pleading eyes met his gaze.
Trey shuddered. Stay firm, he urged himself. This close, it was easy to see the sparse five o'clock shadow of thin blond hairs, the tiny lines of fatigue at the corners of that pouting mouth. "It's so easy, when you've been away, to think that this is what you want." He argued. "But when you're the one who stays at home, who waits for someone to return, seeing those little reminders every day...It's too much to ask."
"I can't stay here; traveling is part of the job."
Jax sounded as weary as Trey felt. "I know. The music comes first, it always has. When will we come first?"
He realized his mistake when Jax's expression brightened. "So you admit there is a we still?"
Opening his mouth to issue a denial, Trey couldn't find the words to express himself. "Damn it, Jax. There's been a we since you pranced in to pre-school in a purple tutu twenty-three years ago." He ignored the bright flash of white teeth as Jax's smile broadened. "But sometimes, the we that we are isn't good for me. Sometimes, I have to think about me, not us. Just like touring is good for you, and your career, I have to think about what's good for me."
Blue eyes darkened with hurt, though Jax controlled his flinch quickly. "You're saying I'm not good for you?"
"You've never been good for me, Jax. Not even during those purple tutu days." His heart ached at the admission.
Jax reared back from him, eye's widening in shock. "What?"
"I've always stood behind you Jax, even when standing there got me made fun of, mocked, ostracized, beat up. Being your friend, being with you, made it all worth while. But when you're not here, how does that make it a we?" He wasn't making sense, he knew that. But his heart believed every word he said, and from the expression on his face, Jax understood what he meant, even if he didn't understand the mess in his head himself.
"There's always a we, right here." Jax tapped his chest. "You're always with me, every mile on every bus, every minute of every concert, every note of every song. Do you think I could step up on a stage anywhere and have the guts to sing about love, or friendship, or hope, if I didn't have you with me?"
His heart rate picked, up, a slow burn began in the pit of Trey's stomach. "Really? But..."
"But nothing. I told you, it's always you. Nothing ever happens on a tour that isn't just work. I crawl into my bunk exhausted after smiling til two am, and I dream of you, of coming back to you, of kissing you—"
Trey stopped his speech with a kiss, flinging aside the bedclothes to invite Jax to climb up with him, devoured his mouth with a hunger born of denial, of loss. He tore his mouth away briefly to mutter, "I love you." Then swallowed Jax's response with another demanding kiss.

***
He stood outside the door of a dingy little apartment in a building identical to his own, balancing the cheery wrapped plate of cookies on one palm, while banging fruitlessly on the door with the other. The sound seemed to echo in the interior, but no answer came. His brows drew tight together; he shifted the plate to his other hand and pressed his palm flat to the door. No heat seeped through.
There was no keyhole to peer through, no peephole to try to spy through.
"Hello?" He called. Somewhere in the distance a thready, weak strand of music drifted in the air. Something sad, and not quite seasonal, not quite distinguishable.
A roaring in his ears soon blocked that sound as well, and all he heard was the rapid trip-thump of his own heart as he stood before that silent, dingy door, waiting for admittance.
In an effort to achieve calm, he drew in a deep breath, and that's when he caught the scent of something evil. Not smoke, no. Smoke was thick and menacing, it reached out and choked you, burned your eyes and will away in visible swirls. If smoke and fire were on the other side of that door, he wouldn't be able to do a damn thing for whoever Aiden had sent him to save.
This was something worse. Something sneaky and perverse, a killer that stole breath without pain, took life without care.
But it was an evil he could fight, a demon he could face more easily than smoke and flame. Foolish as it may seem, he set the cookie plate carefully near the wall, and spun out in a wide angled kick, splintering the door just above the lock.
The foul gas rushed out over him, and he yanked his red thermal long sleeved t-shirt up to cover his nose and mouth, stepping into the bleak apartment. A thin figure lay on a battered mattress in the corner, narrow chest rising slowly under a shabby quilt.
"Hey!" Kyle called. He turned left into the kitchen, where just like in his own unit, a single window let in meager sunlight in the day and reflected desolation back at him in the darkness.  He shoved that window up as far as it could go then, when it refused to stay put, shattered it with a cast iron skillet that sat on the stove top. His second priority was twisting the dial to shut off the flow of sodium scented gas that drenched the air with noxious rotten egg fumes.
The idiot was either trying to kill himself or ...
Let's just go with idiot, Aiden's voice whispered in his ear.
"Hey!" Kyle called again, grabbing a worn blue terry cloth dish towel from the scarred counter top. Kyle ignored the fact that it had a smear of tomato sauce on one end and doused it with cool water from the tarnished tap. Wringing the towel out as he walked to the mattress, Kyle ignored the puddles he left on the utilitarian grey carpet.
At the man's side, Kyle wrapped the cloth about the stranger's mouth and nose and hefted the man in his arms, shabby quilt and all. There was no balcony so, he'd have to take him out in the hall until the air cleared.
And that's where he was, an hour later. Sitting in the dim hall, leaning against the wall, a stranger's ginger head in his lap, sifting his fingers through fine silky straight hair, a plate of sugar cookies on his left. Bemused.
Frosty lashes lifted from pale freckled cheeks, and Kyle found himself staring down into pale blue eyes. "Hello," he said.

By Design

It smelled like vanilla, and sweetness, like pine, smoke and fire. Not the bad kind of smoke that was tinged with fear, but the soft mellow soothing kind that meant a fire in the fireplace and smiling faces. It smelled like home, but that was impossible, because Kyle Martin Jacobs didn't have a home any more. Not since the fire...the bad kind that smelled like destruction and broken dreams and hate.
Now, he had a studio apartment that was close to the station house instead of a three bedroom stucco covered ranch style home in a nice neighborhood. That house had been blocks from Santa's Workshop, where Aiden designed toys for children. Kyle didn't need any more than the studio now, because the fire had taken everything, his clothes, his furniture, his future. Aiden.
"Oh, God." Kyle opened his eyes and jumped from the futon, clutching at the object that nearly fell from the battered thrift shop coffee table as he did. What the fuck was it that he'd left there? Some kind of dinner plate? But he didn't eat any dinner, he never ate away from the station-house where Chief Nick badgered him into join the other firefighters at the table for every meal. Or had he just forgotten warming a plate of leftovers? The chief frequently forced a plate into his hands when the starving team left any food on the table.
His eyes opened wide and he stared at the plate, fingers shaking. "It can't be!"
"It is, though, Kyle."
And it was...a green cellophane wrapped china plate, with tiny boughs of holly bedecked with minuscule red berries at twelve and three, six and nine. A plate full of still warm, red sugar sprinkled cookies that would melt in his mouth if he took just one bite.
A plate that should have shattered in the fire, cookies he couldn't bake, cellophane he'd never have had the patience to wrap so neatly. It was a plate of holiday cookies exactly like the ones Aiden baked to hand out to their friends every year on December first, when they had their annual holiday party and back yard barbecue.
Which they weren't having this year, because there was no backyard left to barbecue in, and no Aiden left to bake.
"It's a fucking dream asshole." He muttered. Then I don't want to wake up. Because if in his dreams he got cookies Aiden baked instead of fiery nightmares of exploding gas grills, then he could sleep forever.
"No, it's not."
He stopped pretending that he couldn't really hear the voice and searched the tiny apartment. "Who are you?"
"Oh come, now, Kyle. You know me."
"I don't." He shook his head, set the plate down and peered into the gloom. There wasn't anywhere for someone to hide. Unless...Silently, Kyle crossed to the bathroom door. He swung the door open and flicked the light switch. It responded with a dubious burst of light followed immediately by a faint buzz and a telling pop before casting the room back into gloom. The illumination lasted just long enough to highlight the vast emptiness of the tiny space. A single towel slung haphazardly over the shower door, a scarcely dented tube of toothpaste, a solitary white toothbrush and a black comb.  No lurking figure of humanity stopped by on its way home form work to leave him cookies.
"Quit fucking around. Come on out." Had to be one of the guys from the station come to coax him back to the North Pole Fire Station House for the annual celebration of the season before the frantic rush of holiday madness. "I’m sorry I didn't stay for the damn pre-Christmas party, okay? It's just that this is hard..."
"I know it is baby."
Baby. He hadn't been called baby in exactly a year. Only one man ever called him baby. "Aiden?" Kyle crumpled down on the floor, the thin worn carpet received him with an indignant burst of musty stale dust particles, and he wrapped his arms around his knees and cried.
"Shhh." It could have been the brush of wind against the lone apartment window. It could have been the furnace shushing into action to warm the chilly little room. It couldn't have smelled like peppermint schnapps and hot chocolate, and Aiden's musky man scent.
But it did. Hot tears spilled down his cheeks, and he rubbed them harshly against the thick coarse fabric of his uniform pants. "God, Aiden, I miss you so much."
A soft tentative hand rubbed between his shoulder blades, hesitated briefly then twined in the long curls that fell down his back. He hadn't cut his hair since Aiden left, and it was longer than regulation allowed. The Chief hadn't given him any grief about cutting it, though, and so he just let it go, because Aiden had liked this, running his fingers through it, tangling the coils around his fingers, and tugging at it to get his attention. Like now.
"Fuck. Aiden?" He jerked upright, and swiveled his head to see who touched him, because no doubt that was a physical touch, he could feel the fingers in his hair even now, toy with the long strands, tangling them together.
"Yes, love."
"You left me." He still couldn't see anything, but vague indications of a figure form the corner of his eye, every time he shifted as though to catch a glimpse, the figure wasn't there, but it was real, he could feel Aiden here with him.
"I'm here, aren't I?"
"Yes," Unbelievably, a spark of joy lit in his cold, dark heart that hadn't felt warm in all of the previous 364 days since Aiden had left him. "Kiss me?" He begged without shame, though prior to those 364 days of loneliness, he wouldn't have dreamed of begging, or even asking, he'd have just taken Aiden's kiss, as something that was his right, his due.
"Close your eyes then," Aiden's words and a delicate touch on his lids closed his eyes. He squeezed them shut, because even if he was imagining that ominous overtone, it wasn't worth risking any consequence to open them. What if he peeked and Aiden disappeared? What if it was all a dream and opening his eyes chased the dream away?
Soft lips brushed lightly over his, a small familiar weight settled in his lap, forcing his knees down until Aiden straddled him, crushing their groins together. Gasping, Kyle pushed up into that weight, opened his mouth to urge the deepening of that kiss.
The very familiarity of every slick plane of tooth, every surge of tongue sent waves of heat washing through him that overwhelmed his grief, burned away the agony of the last year and replaced with it a burning need, a desire for release so strong he shook with it.
His hands moved of their own accord, tracing familiar muscles, finding buttons and zippers and popping them open, sliding them down, seeking flesh that felt cool to the touch, but soothingly so as he was feverish with want. And still the kiss went on, Aiden's tongue deftly enticing him with little nudges and slow caresses to follow into his mouth, where that heavenly mix of Aiden flavors made him drunk with love and joy and remembrance.
Almost without thought, certainly without consideration of the past year, he brought his cock to bear against the tender opening of Aiden's body without ever opening his eyes, without ever risking awakening.
And while his heart thundered its he's here, he's really here cadence, his hips churned with restless urgency, pushing up as his hands dragged Aiden down, bringing them together over and over as he drowned in bliss and sensation he'd thought lost forever.
And even as orgasm wracked his frame, and Aiden mewled into his mouth, and the scent of semen and sweat overtook the vanilla sugar smell, he kept them closed. Until his breathing steadied and the weight in his lap lightened, and a weary sigh that wasn't his stirred the air.
"It's time, Kyle."
"No. You're here. My eyes are closed. You stay."
"I’m cheating just being here for now, Kyle."
"No." His heart wrenched, but he made his voice firm. In all their years together, he'd never denied Aiden anything. No gift was too expensive, no request too onerous. But this he wouldn't do. "I can't go back to not having you, Aiden. You have to stay."
"You have to let me go. I have a job to do. I cheated, by coming here first, but I only have a short time to do what needs to be done. You'll have to help me."
"Anything, Aiden. I'll do anything for you, just don't leave me again."
"I have to, Kyle."
"It's the North Pole, Aiden! It's magic; you can stay. There has to be a way."
"It's the North Pole, yes, and there is magic. But dead is dead. The only magic in that is that even though I'm gone, I get to keep working to make the world a better place."
"You design toys in heaven?"
Soft chuckles stirred his hair, peppermint breath wafted over his lips. "No. I get to do something even better. I design lives, Kyle. It's my new job, and I love it, just like you love saving lives."
"I couldn't save you." Some firefighter he'd turned out to be. Couldn't even save his own lover from the flames that engulfed him.
"It wasn't meant to be. But I can make that up to you."
"You can make it up to me by staying."
"I can't. I’m out of time. You have to take the cookies down to the third floor, apartment G. He won't answer the door, but you'll know what to do when you get there."
"Why the fuck did you come if you didn't plan to stay?"
"I had to come, even if it was cheating, because I had to say good bye. I didn't get to say good-bye, Kyle. Now, go, he needs you."
"But I need you..." His voice trailed off, because it was too late.
And the weight in his lap was completely gone, and all that lingered of his lover was the scent of peppermint and vanilla, and cum. And then, since the dream was gone anyway, Kyle opened his eyes and stared at his bleak little apartment with eyes accustomed to not seeing, and shuddered in distaste. Had he really lived like this? His gaze fell on the wrapped cookies, and he sighed. He hadn't been able to deny Aiden in life, far be it from him to refuse the man's request in death.
A shower and fresh clothes later, he was surprised by how much brighter everything seemed, how whole he felt. Good-bye was important, he supposed. Maybe after he'd dropped off Aiden's cookies, he'd go back over to the station house and tell Chief Nick that he was sorry for being a pain in the ass the past year. If that went well enough, he might even consider walking on to the workshop, to see the frenzy of toy-making as Aiden's old co-workers got ready for the upcoming holiday.

Character Spotlight: Nate Hawthorne of Truth Deeper Than Logic

Please give a warm welcome to Nathan Hawthorne the hero from Truth Deeper Than Logic today as we sit down and see what makes him tick.

Q: So tell us about yourself. What got you in the crosshairs for your author?

I was perhaps a little excessive in my grief over Daniel's death...I believe Lee was captivated by the urban legends of black panthers stalking men in American forests.

Q: What was it that drew you to your mate?

He's was just too cute...running through the woods...I know, that's not nice, but well, I was in panther form and he just smelled right.

Q: A little naughty fun, where was the wildest place you seduced your partner?

Oh, let's see...that time on the floor of the cabin...

Q: Boxers, briefs or Commando on a man?

Definitely commando...in fact, I really prefer naked in general. You humans with your preference for clothing don't know what you're missing.

Q: If your partner wants to seduce you, what's one sure fire trick he/she can play?

That damn, beautiful, sexy little toy...

Q: What is the one place on your partner's body that you know will drive them wild-in and out of bed?

His ears...I just breathe across them and he quivers in my arms...

Q: What was one of the most embarrassing thing your author did to you in Truth Deeper Than Logic?

Me? Well, strolling into a board room all set to wage property war only to discover that my opponent was the man I'd been lusting after for months....

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

Yes. I never ate anyone. Those rumors are completely false. It's the wilderness. Humans are clumsy. Just because they go into the woods and never return doesn't mean I ate them.

Thank you for joining us on 'Meet the Character' day here at Breathless Press Blog.

Thank you for letting me set the record straight.

BLURB
His lover's death filled Nate Hawthorn with rage. From that time were born legends of bloodthirsty cats and killer bears, of humans entering the woods and never leaving.

Legend exaggerated, and he had calmed down and accepted the transiency of human life. Fragile, defenseless, but curious, brave, and loving. He'd allowed their presence in his valley in the beginning because they intrigued him with their resourceful cleverness in turning their fragile bodies into a strength rather than the weakness he'd taken them for.

When Daniel died, he'd chosen to live among them for simple reasons. He felt closer to his lover walking among his descendents. He took a warped pride in the growth and the progress of the town Daniel had started, in the prosperity of Daniel's people even as their growth and progress had overtaken his woods. Perhaps some fatalistic part of him believed that the circle of life would one day claim him, had known that they would one day kill him.

When Seth Greenwood, a junior architect with a local firm who dreamed of bigger things, pinned his hopes for career advancement on a project that required the use of Nate's land, Nate realized how much he wanted to live. And how very much he wanted Seth.

Tantalizing Tuesday: Making Up

Flash Fiction for 5/3- Making Up

Making Up
by Lee Brazil

"You think you can do no wrong, don't you?"

Chris's scorn raked over old wounds. Good let him be angry.  Stan was sick of pretending to be friends with his ex. He'd engineered this meeting to resolve that issue.

"It's not my opinion of myself that bothers you." Stan scowled at his critic. "It's my opinion of you that riles you. Anyone would think it was your money we're talking about. You're a tightfisted miser, Chris." Money had been at the root of all their fights back then, too.

"Your boundless ego ceased to be amusing three bounced checks and an over the limit gold card ago." Chris scribbled something on a note pad.

"I don't know what you're talking about." Stan shifted forward to hide the way his dick responded to Chris's display of emotion. Too many memories of angry make up sex that melted into tender apologies battered at him. "Don't I pay you to take care of all that shit?"

"One of the bounced checks was written to me."

"So you don't work for me now?" Stan darted from his chair and dropped into Chris's lap.

"No."

"Then there's no reason I can't do this, is there?"

Tuesday Tease #5
No Such Thing As Bad Publicity

"How did you expect me to react?" Axel's voice rose as he continued. " Be thrilled the big rock star deigned to fuck me?"
"If fucking were all it was about, I wouldn't have bothered calling." The air sizzled with Griff's fury. "I've been lonely on tour. I wanted you three months ago. I want you now."
"Not interested."
"Why are you doing this to us?" Griff sighed wearily, leaning against the rough brick of the apartment building.
"There is no us."
"You're just pissy because I didn't call sooner."
"I am not pissy. I'm hurt." The last was whispered so softly Griff almost missed it.
The simple phrase rang with the truth, even through the phone. "You saw the Spanish photo shoot." Nothing else could explain Axel's attitude.
"Along with the 'Griff and Jake Kiss and Make Up" headline."
"Axel, you know that's just publicity. Jake and I are over. I want you, not him. Let me come over?"
"You're standing outside, aren't you?"
Griff slung his guitar over his shoulder and smiled at the door. "I got your message." He glanced at the plant that used to hide the spare key. "Where's the new hiding place?"

Tantalizing Tuesday #3

Welcome back to Tantalizing Tuesday!
Have a little bit of an issue this morning. *shakes head*
These boys. Just an FYI- picture him with longer hair...

"I've got nothing to say."
"I have," Blayne snapped sharply. "Someone has to make you see the mess you're making of your life!"
Aaron tossed his head, sending waves of hair tumbling through the rough wood slats of the park bench. He clamped his lips shut, holding in the bitter retort that trembled on his tongue. Don't feed the trolls in the park;  they'll never leave you alone.
"Who answered your phone?" Blayne continued relentlessly. "A new trick? Can't you ever sleep alone?"
The unjust accusations struck especially hard since he'd spent the last three months very much alone. Fury and inexplicable pain roared to life. "Fuck you, Blayne. We spent one night together. Great sex does not entitle you to pass judgment. Think what you like; I am not a slut."
"Oh? So that wasn't you I picked up in that bar?" Blayne's lips twisted.
"I'm off." Aaron swung his feet off the bench and sat upright. He winced as the splintered wood pulled at his hair. He didn't give a damn about the physical pain though. "I wasn't alone in that bar looking to get laid. If that makes me a slut, then what does it make you?"
