Sage Advice

Awesome advice. Only problem is, then the phone rings...or you know, you open up Face Book...otherwise known as Time Suck.

Finding your own voice is very difficult for a writer. Learning to say what you mean, to put words together so they make sense is challenging. Then, when you think you've done it...along comes someone with an opinion.

And they may say that what you said was dumb, or ill-expressed, or wrong.

It can be discouraging, that certainty some people have that you aren't doing things right.

Just remember, its your voice, your story, your call.

I have to remember this.

Take A Look at the Back List: Donovan's Deal

LOOK

Look! A Writing Challenge!  This is revised from a challenge that was circulating in 2012.
The Rules are simple:

Find the word LOOK in one of your back list books, and then post the three paragraphs surrounding it. Post your favorite three, the ones that are most intriguing and then tag three other authors who might like to share their back-list. I'm tagging Em Woods, Sara York, and Silvia Violet.

This excerpt is from Donovan's Deal Truth or Dare #6

Interesting. "Forgot my wallet. What do you mean you can't afford to support me? I have a very decent salary for the work I do as Dan's assistant, and Donovan and I are doing just fine at supporting ourselves." Of course, they'd do much better at it if Donovan would just use some of the god damn money from the trust for things like Matt's school and soccer fees, house payments and vehicles. No. Not his antiquated fossil. Donovan had strong ideas about his role as the man of the family, about providing for his loved ones. Mischa pulled a wad of hundred dollar bills from the leather wallet and tossed them on the table in front of him. He cast an inquiring glance at Terry to see if he planned to answer the question.
Terry grabbed the wallet back muttering dire insults under his breath. "You're paying that back. And quit looking at me. I'm not in financial difficulties."
Mischa smirked and clicked his piercing loudly. "You'll end up owing it to me in a few hours anyway!" But he noted the lie in Terry's eyes, and made a note to sound out Dex and Trick about what was going on his brother's house.

Crawl in Bed With Zach Morrison (Angel Martinez)

Crawling Into Bed With
And a Good Book

Important things first, are these sheets silk or cotton?

Cotton sheets today, dear. I've brought someone along who just wouldn't be able to handle the fuss of silk. Lee, this is former Marine Sergeant Zachary Morrison, who currently acts as the head of sidhe Prince Lugh's security. Zack, dear, you don't mind if we use you for the middle of the sandwich, do you?

Zack shrugs. "Lived with fae for too long now, Ms. Angel. They're a cozy bunch, let me tell you. Never quite sure who'll end up on your lap. So long as Mr. Brazil doesn't mind."

What are you wearing?

Me? I'm in the new snowflake jammies I got for Christmas. Zack, I'm sorry, you can't wear your boots and jeans to bed.

"Sorry." Zack strips down to a pair of deep blue boxer briefs, revealing a beautifully sculpted body with some vivid scars on his chest and legs. "This all right?"

Get in the bed, handsome. Keep us warm.

What are we snacking on in bed while we read tonight?

"Ms. Angel asked me to bring something." Zack leans down to the foot of the bed and hands out bowls with steam rising from them. "I'm no gourmet but I can find my way around the kitchen. This is my chili recipe. You have to start with the chili powder and the onions and garlic cooking by themselves and you have to use black beans. Nothing else works the same. Takes a few hours but it's worth it."

He leans in close to hand Lee a napkin wrapped bundle, whispering in his ear, "And corn bread. It's not chili night without corn bread."

If I open this nightstand drawer, what will I find?

"Careful! My gun's in there. Some old ticket stubs. Couple of keys leftover from something. Box of condoms. Dog tags. Lube." Zack rummages around and flushes scarlet. "Um...how did the handcuffs get in there?"

Do you roll up in the blankets like a burrito, or kick the covers off during the night?

"I get over heated easier these days. Something about lycanthropy and increased metabolism, at least that's what I hear. I don't stay under the covers long these days."

Can I put my cold feet on your calves to warm them up?

Zack laughs and pats Lee's leg. "Of course you can. I'm always finding some fae cutie snuggling up to me to get warm in the evenings. Gotten to the point where I feel like an extra piece of furniture when we all watch TV together at night."

What are we reading? (include your cover art, buy links & excerpt)

"I'll let Ms. Angel handle this one. I guess she felt like she had to tell the story but I can't say I'm real comfy with parts of it."

Man up, Morrison. People want the good and the bad. Zack's story just released in:

Semper Fae: Endangered Fae 3

Blurb:
Zack thought he had a strange job before. Working as a Marine medic in a secret government installation was odd, but working as a human liaison to the fae and as the personal assistant to a sidhe prince is downright bizarre. Throw in the fact that he's pretty damn sure he's fallen in love with his boss, and things are close to unmanageable.

Of course, around the fae, a man learns never to say 'things can't possibly get any worse.' Unexplained events have begun to plague the human world. Strange sightings, spontaneous explosions of magic, and odd bends in reality crop up. When Finn falls terribly ill and a monstrous creature attacks Zack one night, things quickly slide into disaster. Lycanthropy, loose-cannon mages, and Lugh conspire to make a hellish mess out of things - but the real peril begins when Diego loses an important piece of his mind.

Available from:

Excerpt:

“He’s a queer, Marion! You’re son’s a fucking fag!”

“Watch your language, Jim, I won’t have it in the house.” Zack’s mother turned to him, her face lined with worry. “Sweetie, it wasn’t you, I know. That fairy prince probably just grabbed you and kissed you. They’re strange folks, it’s not your fault. I know you don’t want to say anything bad about your boss and all, but you can tell me what happened.”

Zack rubbed a hand over the back of his neck. When had his mother gotten so small? And his father so old? “Look, Mom, Dad, it’s not like I didn’t want to tell you someday. But it just hasn’t come up—”

“Now you know why he never brought girlfriends home!” His retired-sergeant father bellowed. “He wasn’t married to his career, he was boning—”

“Jim, please! This is hard enough!”

“I didn’t have boyfriends, either, Dad.” Zack felt the flush rise up to his hairline but he kept his voice calm. “I haven’t had anyone. But it is true. You need to know and I should have told you before…all this. I am gay. No way around it.”

“And this is what you bring home to us? All this shit on the TV that the neighbors have to point out to your poor mother? You’re a disgrace! A discredit to the Corps and your family!”

“Yeah, well, don’t ask, don’t tell, Dad. And then even after that, it wasn’t easy. Why do you think I’ve been alone so long?” Zack held up a hand to cut off his father’s next tirade. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry you had to find out this way and I’m sorry it’s made you unhappy. I’m not sorry about who I am.” He turned to grab his coat from the wall hook. “I’m going out for a walk. I need to cool down. You need to cool down. Maybe we can talk like grownup people later.”

“You little shit! How dare you take that tone with me? I oughta take—”

Zack sighed and walked out the door. He had too many years and too many horrific experiences under his belt to still be cowed by his father. Still hurts, though.

He’d played the scene out in his mind again and again over the years, how he would make sure his father was sober and everyone was calm, how he would come out to them, calmly and matter-of-factly. Except he never had, and now instead of being able to work through it in the privacy of the family, the whole county knew. Hell, the whole country knew, his conservative, Midwestern parents exposed to the malicious whispers of neighbors and congregation members. At least, that’s how they would see it. Did see it.

Damn.

He should have been really pissed at the big guy for putting them through this, but he couldn’t muster any anger toward Lugh. Not the first time he’s kissed me. Not like I didn’t like it.

Zack’s hand stole up to his lips, still able to feel the tingling from that passionate, desperate lip-lock in the alley.

“Tonight, Zachary, please,” Lugh had whispered in his ear. “Don’t torture me any longer. I need your strong arms around me, your skin next to mine…”

Right. The thought of fumbling through his first night of sex with someone who had centuries of experience stopped him cold, made him back off in embarrassment and, once again, gently refuse. As always, Lugh respected his wishes, even though he was powerful enough to have shoved Zack against the wall and taken him right then and there, he never pushed farther than Zack let him, never forced the issue. It had been with clenched teeth and a heart-rending groan that time, but still the Prince backed off.

He loved Lugh for that. Stupid jerk. You’ve loved him from the first time you saw him. That first heart-stopping meeting in the middle of a skirmish, Lugh shining like moonlight and ripped like a god in his skin-tight silver armor. Damn, damn, and damn. He had to stop thinking like this. Lugh was a prince and his grandmother’s Champion, and the Ambassador to the whole human world. He could never love a human, an ex-soldier, a nobody without any rank or importance.

Not the way Finn loved Diego. It was in his eyes every time he looked at Diego, every time anyone mentioned Diego, there it was, that contented ‘I’m-his-for-all-eternity’ look. Lugh was fond of him, sure, but his eyes wandered everywhere. He wasn’t a one-man kind of fae, and never claimed he could be.

Unfortunately, that’s what Zack needed, someone who was his and only his, so, of course, he had the bad sense to fall for someone he couldn’t have that way.

“Dumb jarhead,” he muttered as his feet hit the path that led to the park. “Sabotaged yourself again.”

When he reached the lake, he stopped, shoved his hands in his pockets and pulled in a deep breath of cold air. The full moon perched huge and white on the tops of the pines, her twin shining up in rippling splendor from the surface of the lake. It was a beautiful scene and being out in the peace of a late autumn night with no machine noises did calm him. If he hadn’t gone into the service, he probably would have been a forest ranger or something. Peaceful…

The first scream ripped the night in half. Zack dropped to a crouch. His hand shot to his hip where no weapon rode as he tried to pinpoint a direction. The second scream spun him to his left. Down the path toward the trees, a girl stood with her back to a lamp post, frozen in an attitude of sheer horror, while another figure grappled with…

“Holy shit,” Zack whispered as he ran to help.

A huge muzzle rose and fell. Sharp teeth flashed in the moonlight. One of those huge hybrid dogs? A hyena? What the hell was that thing? The figure on the ground received a moment’s reprieve as the beast turned toward the pounding of Zack’s boots. A boy, probably the girl’s date, staggered up and then ran like hell.

Coward. Zack couldn’t help the thought even though he knew the boy had done the right thing as the beast turned on him, snarling. He put himself between it and the girl, and only had time to shout over his shoulder, “Run, damn it!”

The thing leapt at him, spittle flying from canines as long as Zack’s hand. Instinct and adrenaline kicked in. Zack seized it by the throat, pressing his thumbs hard into its windpipe. Its breath reeked. Its ice-blue eyes held madness.

Momentum on its side, it hurled Zack to the ground, the air forced from his lungs as he slammed into the concrete path. He kept his grip, heart pounding against his breastbone. Any slip would be the end of him.

“Oh my God! Oh fuck! Hurry! It’s gonna eat him!” The girl hadn’t run. She was screaming into her cell phone.

Not just for himself then, he had to hang on for the kid. The monster snapped at his face and lunged again. Something was wrong about the shape of its back. Its limbs were jointed in a way no canine’s should be. Its hands closed over his biceps, claws biting through his coat into his skin.

Holy fucking hells. This thing has thumbs.

Back claws scrabbled, ripped into his legs. The beast shifted position and lunged again. Zack’s arms trembled with the strain. Its front claws tore at his chest, agony in the wake of those talons. His left hand lost purchase. The thing’s teeth sank into his shoulder.

Someone was screaming. It might have been the girl. Might have been him. Hard to tell when the world had collapsed to nothing but searing points of pain. Sirens. Shouting. Gunshots. Everything faded into the nightmare hum inside his head. I’m never seeing my Prince again…

Curried Rice

Recipe Theme of the Month: Nostalgia
Hey there! I've been thinking a lot about recipes my mom used to make, that I loved as a kid but never seem to serve as an adult. This is a really simple dish that tastes like ti took hours to prepare. It's spicy and filling.

Curried Rice With Raisins and Almonds
. Ingredients:
3 tablespoons butter
¼ cup of diced onion
¼ cup of diced carrots
1 cup uncooked long-grain rice (We use Jasmine or Basmati)
2 cups chicken broth or beef broth (Or Vegetable broth, even)
1/4 cup raisins
¼ cup of slivered almonds
1 teaspoon curry powder
Preparation:
Melt butter in a heavy medium saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and carrots. Cook for about 5 minutes, until soft. Add rice and stir to coat well with the butter. Add broth, raisins, almonds and curry powder. Stir to combine ingredients. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer for 20 minutes, or until rice is tender and liquid has been absorbed.

Once again, this is a dish that can be personalized. I like to add chopped dried apricots, or cherries instead of raisins sometimes. Substitute celery for the carrots, or even peas. You can heat up with red pepper flakes, even. Throw in some chickpeas or chicken, and it’s a main dish.

Does your cat look at you like this?

Mine does. I don't know what she expects from me, but I do know that she doesn't think she's getting it. I usually get this look right before she turns her back on me and pointedly stares elsewhere.

Sometimes, the look is accompanied by a tail swish.

That's when I know I'm in trouble.

She hasn't forgiven me for shutting her up in the back porch for a week while we had dogs visiting.  I explained to her that the visitors were much too large for the back porch, and that it was only temporary, and strictly for her own safety.

That's right.

She looked at me like this.

I have a very expensive array of gourmet cat food in tiny pouches and tins to mollify her injured feelings.

I hope to avoid any unpleasantness.

If you don't here from me for a while...send help.

February Projects

February Projects

Hi everyone!
Come on in and sit a spell. *sips coffee* Ahhh. That's good stuff. I’m working my fingers to the bone this month... well, not really. I'm working at adding another book to my paperback collection: Going to skip over Taking the Dare for now until I can do the whole series...Breathless Press currently holds a paper rights contract on the first three books and I need to explore the options there. The next paperback release will be Mark's Opening Gambit, not sure exactly when as it needs to be re-edited, formatted and cover art designed. Definitely by the end of the month though.

I'm working on a series of regency romances with a friend, we're planning six titles, three M/M, which I'll write, and three mmf, which she will write. We're calling it Behind Closed Doors, The Brigstock Family. The first book, Randall's Romance is nearly complete and I'm really enjoying revisiting the regency setting. (I wrote Less Than All last year and it was my first venture into the realm of Regency England) This is all first draft work, so of course you won't be seeing it until maybe June.

Speaking of regencies, I am adding a new title to my Rake series this month. This one is called Tailored for You, and will feature Gavin's visit to his tailor. *fans face* As you know, these naughty little stories are just for fun pieces. Quick and sexy, Heated Exchanges can take place anywhere, any time, between any characters.

And Story Orgy is working on a new anthology, this one based on prompts provided by readers in the form of song titles form the 50's. I’m basing my story around the song Dream Lover by Bobby Derrin. It's turning out to be a very different sort of story, more than a little surreal. So far I've had call to draw on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the poetry of Robert Frost, Homer, and L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz. Should be fun. I'm enjoying writing it, anyway. Deadline is April first, and I need to add another 3K this month to bring it to the required 10K. Should definitely be doable.

Last but not least- I'll be outlining the third Chances Are story this month. I’m not going to tell you many details, because, well...the second story isn't out yet and I don't want to spoil it for you. Suffice it to say that it isn't following the outline I planned when I plotted out the five story romance ARC. *chuckles* That's okay. I have ideas for a bit of a fling for one of the other characters... But that will have to wait till later.

I’m limiting myself to three projects a month. The plan is to write 35K a month, 3 stories, one of 20K, one 10K, one 5K. Let's see how that goes for 2013, shall we?

Thanks for stopping by!

Taking a LOOK at the backlist: Keeping House

LOOK

I'm tagging Tom Webb, Angel Martinez, and Havan Fellows.

My excerpt is from KEEPING HOUSE, available at

“Sorry to wake you, Mr. Holloway,” he called, grateful that his voice came out sounding masculine instead of squeaky. Knowing there was nothing he could do to disguise his erection in his tight clothes; he turned quickly back to survey the jumbled interior of the small van.
He heard Donovan’s approaching footsteps squelching in the soggy leaves and looked down to see the man’s long, elegant feet in flip-flops parked next to his own combat boots. Fuck. He even had sexy feet? There really was no justice in the world. If there were, the man would have some visible flaw to counteract his gorgeousness. Maybe he’s got a tiny cock, and that’s God’s little joke, or he prefers to bottom, too. In which case even if I got him into bed neither of us would know what the fuck to do with the other.
Coughing, he turned to his friends. “Mr. Holloway, these are my friends, who were kind enough to help me move.” Actually, he’d quite recently discovered that they were his only real friends, but Donovan didn’t need to know that the hundreds of hangers-on who’d been happy to party with him when he was flush had disappeared when the money had gone. He pulled Bella forward from where she tried to hide behind him, “This is Bella, and that’s Dex and Trick.” He waved in the direction of the twins hoping their behavior at the moment was discreet enough not to turn Donovan off the idea of letting them in his house.

Coming Soon: Holidays With Jacob

Releasing February 15, 2013

Holidays With Jacob
Pre-order at BREATHLESS PRESS

In Loving Jacob they were torn apart, then brought together again for a fresh start. Follow Malcolm Jenner and Jacob Renault through a year of special days as their relationship grows.
Join Malcolm and Jacob as they forge their relationship amid the ashes of the past. From making love again for the first time, to letting go of past ties, these two men still make mistakes, but the past has taught them to be honest with one another and to consider each other's needs in addition to their own wants and desires.
Celebrate a year of holidays, joys, failures, and triumphs as Malcolm and Jacob learn that it takes more than love to build a relationship that lasts.

Excerpt
Malcolm stopped him with a hand on his forearm. "Let's take a walk on the beach while there's still some light and clean up later." He managed to make the suggestion sound casual though he felt as though his heart were beating out of his chest in a visible cartoon character manner. He patted nervously at his pocket for the items he'd placed there earlier.
Jacob nodded and twisted his wrist so that their hands were clasped together. Malcolm's heartbeat stuttered as he caught a brief glimpse of the fine scars that criss-crossed their way up Jacob's arm. They hadn't been good for each other all those years ago. What made him think that this time around would be any different? Hand in hand they descended the shallow steps to the sand from the deck. He started to speak a few times, and bit back the words. He wasn't sure how to phrase what he wanted to say. Damn it.
"Malcolm, what's going on here?" Jacob's voice was soft, tentative. He seemed very young and insecure suddenly, more so than Malcolm had ever seen him.
Bracing his spine and turning to face Jacob, Malcolm took a deep breath before finding his voice, husky with emotion. "If I tell you the truth…"
Jacob's gaze locked with Malcolm's. "Malcolm, you're creeping me out here. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but this is all just a little, well, creepy. The truth would be fine. Go ahead. I can handle it."
Malcolm smiled. He rubbed his thumb over the scars at Jacob's wrist. He felt on comfortable footing again. "But, is it more than you want?"
Jacob flushed and swallowed visibly, but answered without hesitation. "No. I want this." He gestured to the romantic moonlight with their clasped hands, towards where the incoming tide washed away the remains of the day. He hesitated briefly then rushed on as though determined to get the words out. "I love you. I always have, since the very first time in the elevator." Jacob laughed, a little darkly. "Hell, I moved back here from Vermont, gave up a good teaching position with the university, for a second chance with you, Malcolm. Whatever your truth is, I can handle it."
Malcolm paused in astonishment. On reflection, he realized that it was true, and recognized that on a certain level he had known all along that this was the case. The soft glow in Jacob's eyes hadn't appeared there suddenly, it had been there all along. The knowledge gave him the courage he needed to speak himself.
"I love you, too. I want to be with you. That is my truth."

Loving Jacob (insert pic)
When Malcolm Jenner’s sex-on-the-side turns into more, he isn’t above begging for a second chance.
Malcolm is looking for a bit of fun, nothing serious.  He's got duties and responsibilities, after all. He doesn’t usually choose his lovers from the office, but his attraction to Jacob Renault is too compelling to resist.
However,  Jacob isn't interested in temporary.  He wants it all, Prince Charming the castle, the happily ever after.  There's no rule that says he can't have fun while he's searching for his prince though.
At first neither is willing to compromise their stance, but an agreement is reached, with each man planning to do his best to subvert the other to his viewpoint.  Lust turns to love, and what’s impossible becomes merely improbable, but is it going to be enough?
Like that taste? Want to see more of how our heroes reached this point?

The Librarian
Valentine Michaels has just taken a vow of celibacy. Adrian Grey intends to take full advantage of that vow to re-create his relationship with Val.
Val is at a crossroads in his life. A college dropout, he's gone as far as he can in his career as a cosmetologist, owning his own style salon. He no longer finds satisfaction in it, though he's put years into proving to his bigoted parents that a college degree and the veneer of straightness aren't the only roads to success. They'd turned their backs on him, and he proved he didn't need them to make it.
His love life is no better than his working life. His relationships always start with a bang and fizzle into boredom, or worse, anger.
Adrian has his own agenda for helping Val: he's been in love with Val since they were freshmen. The intervening years of listening to Val's gossip about his lovers and relationships have taught Adrian just what it was he did wrong all those years ago, and he thinks this time around he now knows exactly how to get—and keep—his man.

Tomato Rice Soup

Recipe Theme of the Month: Nostalgia
Hey there! I've been thinking a lot about recipes my mom used to make, tha I loved as a kid but never seem to serve as an adult. This is a really simple dish that we had frequently.

Tomato Rice Soup

My mom made this soup with a can of diced tomatoes, or sometimes with tomatoes she'd canned from the garden the summer before.  Beef or chicken stock, rice or even at times barley- though I guess not many people cook with barely anymore. It's hot, light, and filling. Perfect for an afternoon meal with a grilled cheese sandwich and a great way to use leftovers!

Ingredients:

1 can of diced tomatoes with juice
2 cups broth
1/4 cup chopped celery with leaves
1/2 bay leaf, crumbled (you can play with the seasoning... I made this yesterday with Italian seasoning)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 cup cooked long grain rice

Preparation:
Bring tomatoes, broth and seasonings to a boil in a large saucepan. Add rice and heat through. Taste and add more salt and pepper to taste.

You can kick it up with Mexican spices, use macaroni instead of rice, make it your own in a lot of ways. Do you have a homestyle favorite soup?

Who has lit your flame?

Yes, I know, the grammar's a bit flubbed.

I think I owe that flame to quite a few people over the last 45 years. From the fifth grade teacher who had our class write legends explaining natural phenomena as part of a history lesson, to the sophomore literature teacher who gave us everything from the Wizard of Oz to the Great Gatsby to read, to the professor who asked if I had always written with grace...

I owe my "spark" to dozens of influences.

Where does yours come from?

February Releases Update

February Releases

Hi everyone!

Just a note about what February is bringing. I have three releases scheduled for this month. That sounds like a lot, but when I tell you two of them are 5K short stories, and the other is a collection of short stories I wrote over the course of 2012, you'll realize that I am not being over worked. LOL

First, I've had a short story that I wrote back in 2011 that I love. Its hard to find a publisher who accepts shorts though, outside of anthologies, and believe it or not, a lot of people don't buy anthologies! So, this story is finally seeing the light of day via Lime Time Press, my little self publishing venture. It's a Valentine story about a man with a secret, and the man who hopes to love him. While it's a romantic story, it doesn't end with a wedding or an avowal of love. It's a beginning with the promise of a future HEA. Look for Under the Pier at e-book dealers on Feb. 8th

Second, my anthology of Malcolm and Jacob short stories is releasing form Breathless Press on February 15. This collection covers a year of holidays as Malcolm Jenner and Jacob Renault, heroes of Loving Jacob, try to put their relationship back together again. It is currently available for pre-order at BREATHLESS PRESS and will release elsewhere on Feb. 15.

Last, you may not know this, but I write stories that are more erotic, less romantic, quick erotic sex-capades without the HEA, under the name L.B.. The first series of those, A Rake in London, is releasing over the next few months Book #2, A Debt of Honor: Collected will release at the end of February. They are a lot of fun to write, and the Regency is a lovely era to visit. If HEA isn't a requirement for you, I hope you give them a try!

Thanks for stopping by!
