Blurb:
Rory Donovan’s life is a hot mess. His marriage is failing and he’s in intensive psychotherapy, working through the unfortunate side effects of memories from a childhood trauma. The only thing good in his life right now is his job—teaching photography to gifted high school students.
Harbor Patrol officer Bennett Foster is co-parenting his teenage daughter with his high school best friend Jessie. When he meets Addison’s teacher and realizes they’ve met before, he can’t get the sexy stranger out of his head.
Striking up a sexual-tension-filled friendship, together they must help an angsty teenager deal with a dying friend. Bennett must keep his little family from falling apart while Rory struggles to come to terms with his new reality. Somewhere along the way, most unexpectedly…love happens.

EXCERPT

Dr. Conlan treated me to a rare fond smile, almost motherly in its warmth. “I’m pleased to see you happier than you have been.”
I grinned back, but then my brow furrowed. “Does this make me gay?”
“Does that matter?”
“I don’t know. Should it?”
“I’ll never understand the fascination with labeling things that our society seems to have. To me, sexuality is as intangible as the universe. There’s no way to truly know what’s out there, and how it all relates to everything else.
“As humans, we seek to know, to understand, and somehow we feel that putting things in boxes and labeling helps us do that. But some things are fluid, changing and developing with the tide of the evolution of life. Do me a favor, Rory. Don’t put yourself in a box.”

I was dumbfounded, stunned speechless. I knew I’d remember Dr. Conlan’s words for the rest of my life, and I would try to stay as true to them as I could. “I won’t,” I whispered.

Meet J.K. Hogan:
J.K. Hogan has been telling stories for as long as she can remember, beginning with writing cast lists and storylines for her toys growing up. When she finally decided to put pen to paper, magic happened. She is greatly inspired by all kinds of music and often creates a “soundtrack” for her stories as she writes them. J.K. is hoping to one day have a little something for everyone, so she’s branched out from m/f paranormal romance and added m/m contemporary romance. Who knows what’s next?
J.K. resides in North Carolina, where she was born and raised. A true southern girl at heart, she lives in the country with her husband and young son, a cat, and two champion agility dogs. Running Late, Things to Tell Writers, Ugly Rant #writestuff #caffeinateme #news

Good afternoon friends! *gulps coffee* I'm running way late again today! Here it is afternoon and I'm sitting in my PJ's trying to get caught up. Thank goodness for coffee! It's another gorgeous fall day, which is quite unusual for where I live. Usually it's sweltering in August and September. I'm really enjoying the milder temperatures. Haven't had to turn the ac back on since I turned it off last week. J The day was made brighter by this fabulous review from Melanie at Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words for Dead Man's Hand, the latest book in my Pulp Friction series Jack of Spades. I've been stressed all season about how people were perceiving Sabine, and finally I feel like I'm getting it right in showing his true nature and motivations. This review single-handedly renewed my enthusiasm for writing the final installment. Then again... Melanie makes it pretty clear she's expecting big things in book five. The pressure to deliver is on!

Yesterday on FaceBook I saw this, which really made me smile, and secretly cheer. Authors need to hear this. 10 Things You Should Regularly Tell Writers.  My favorite bit is:

“HERE, I BOUGHT YOU YOUR FAVOURITE SNACK, AND I’M WILLING TO BE YOUR SLAVE AND MAKE YOU ANY SNACK YOU LIKE, SO HERE’S A LITTLE SILVER BELL TO RING WHEN YOU NEED A REFILL OF MINI RASPBERRY CREAM CHEESECAKES.”

Margaritas! Bring me margaritas and I will write until I pass out. If you're an author, what would you like to hear? Or what do you need to hear? I need to hear that people like what I'm writing. Feedback feeds creativity. I don't know how or why, but it does. So if you read something and like it? Let the author know.

What kind of coffee do mummies drink?

De-coffinated!

Today I sent the edits for A Man of Unusual Talent back to my fabulous editor, Jae. Now I have to write a blurb for it. Blurbs are one of the worst things about writing. I have learned though- just a bit, in the last five years. For future projects, I plan to write the blurb first, then the book. I've done it a few times, with Cranberry Pi and some other stories. Staring at this blank page today makes me think I should enforce it as a general rule of writing. After that, I'll be tackling the next section of Mum's the Word. Look for that to be posted here tomorrow.

In other news, I'm helping out Will at Pride promotions with a cover reveal for a new book, Unbreak Broken. The reveal is on September 1. There's a great blurb and giveaway, and you should come on over and enter that.

I was all set to share an article on the role of the audience in writing  this morning, but then when I logged into G+ to hang out with my fellow PF writers, this happened:

The blogger's point is well taken. We've all seen a multitude of covers that use the same models. How many Jimmy Thomas covers are there out there? Fabio? What I find off-putting about this article is not that point. It's the abusive tone and derogatory comments like "Butt-ugly". The post in general makes me regard the site in a different light. What do you think?

This morning's note has been brought to you by the power of caffeine and the music of Steve Miller  *refills coffee mug* Thanks for hanging out with me, guys. Sorry to make it so fast today, but I think I'm running behind and I won't feel like I've caught up until I get a few words on the page.

Cover Reveal: The Pinch of the Game Charlie Descoteaux #pridepromotions #mmromance

Author Name: Charley Descoteaux

Book Name: The Pinch of the Game

Release Date: June 24, 2015
Blurb:

Being a witch doesn’t mean one can beat the devil forever.

Jeffrey Overton, unemployed IT professional turned poker player, pushes his luck once too often and runs afoul of the host of an illegal card club. The man sent to escort Jeffrey to a “meeting” about his supernatural winning streak arrives at Jeffrey’s crappy North Portland apartment, lock-picking tools in hand and a charm to block Jeffrey’s magick.

Head muscle for said host, Mike Wells, is a Daisy from Daisyville. He isn’t a witch. What he lacks in magickal talent he makes up for in brawn, so he doesn’t expect the guy he’s after to overpower him. But once Mike renders Jeffrey helpless, he’d rather seduce him than bring him in.

Jeffrey and Michael ditch the “meeting” and end up hunting some of the same people they ran from, trying to get Jeffrey back into his own body. And that’s only part of the adventure. The pair travel halfway across the country on the quietest road trip in history and find missing people, empire-building witches, and maybe even the families they’d both thought lost to them.

Excerpt:
If Sal had sent someone after me, a short trip up to Seattle might be a good idea, maybe even BC. That called for some new clothes, so I grabbed my battered gym bag—my quick escape kit—and was almost home free when the kitchen door burst open. It would’ve been dumb to turn off the light when the goomba first went to work on the lock—I can’t see any better in the dark than your average Daisy, not when I’m blocked. Once that massive body filled the doorway, I wished I had. Wished I’d done something.
He hesitated, barely a moment, and I bolted for the front door. He grabbed me before I made it out of the kitchen and pinned both of my arms to my sides. It wouldn’t work, I knew that, but I still tried to burn his hands. All I needed was enough time to—fuck, is he laughing?
“Give it up, pretty boy. You’re blocked.”
The big man pushed me against the wall face-first and pulled both hands behind my back.
“Hey, wait a sec, big guy. Let’s talk about this. I can—”
He pushed me flat against the wall, and the rest of that sentence disappeared in the rush of air he squeezed from my lungs. I couldn’t help being turned on, even though pain and domination usually aren’t my thing. Neither are bears, but underneath the padding he felt nice and solid, leaning full against me. He tightened a plastic zip tie around my wrists with shaking hands. And then he held me there.

About the author:

Charley Descoteaux has always heard voices. She was relieved to learn they were fictional characters, and started writing when they insisted daydreaming just wasn’t good enough. In exchange, they’ve agreed to let her sleep once in a while. Charley grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area during a drought, and found her true home in the soggy Pacific Northwest. She has survived earthquakes, tornadoes, and floods, but couldn’t make it through one day without stories.

Excerpt:
Professor Wrig gestured to the stump. “Seiran, if you will demonstrate, please?”
Rose looked like she’d swallowed a lemon. “I can show them how it’s done, Professor,” she said.
“I’m sure you can, Miss Pewette. However, I already asked Mr. Rou.”
I took a deep breath and stepped up to the stump, wondering if I was allowed to actually focus with the earth this time. “Can I kneel?” I asked Wrig quietly.
“Whatever you feel is necessary.”
I knelt and waited for instructions.
Professor Wrig explained, “As Mr. Rou is showing you, he is putting himself in close contact with his element. He will be pulling power from the earth. Should he accidentally pull too much, he can give it back without causing damage to us or the surrounding area. He will take the time he needs to focus his power, and then he will place his hands to the stump. All witches with a measurable level will make something grow. A level one will produce moss or ivy. A level two will create flowers or even a small bud of a new tree. His level is set by what grows. Whenever you’re ready, Seiran.”
“Try not to kill any of us,” Rose sneered from behind me.
I sighed, closed my eyes, and left all their scattered whispering behind. It didn’t matter that Rose didn’t shut up or that Blond Hair looked at me like he was imagining what sex with me would be like. The earth and I knew each other well. I let it flow through me, like I was nothing more than a pebble in a lake to be shaped and guided by it. Each breath brought renewed life. I set my hands to the stump, remembering the last time, when I’d made wildflowers burst forth from the dead tree. This time I didn’t even look. The earth would grow what it wanted to with me as its conduit.
The power flowed through me in natural peaks and waves. The crowd gasped. The wood shifted and moved beneath my hands. I let the earth move as it wanted until the final wave subsided. Letting go, I opened my eyes and stared at a giant oak tree, leaves growing to a rich, vibrant green. No wildflowers this time. I smiled at the tree and patted its strong, new trunk, which split the old stump in half.
“Very good, Mr. Rou,” Professor Wrig told me. She offered me a hand up. I stood, dusted off my pants, and went to the back of the line. “Next,” she said.
And so began the testing.

Seth was practically screaming in the other man’s face by this point. He couldn’t believe the guys nerve. Out the corner of his eye Sal made an appearance, but hesitated in the doorway, obviously unsure as to whether or not he should interrupt.
Lightning fast, Jared grabbed his wrist, using it to pull a struggling Seth closer until they were flat up against each other. He leaned in close to Seth, whispering into his ear. "Let's get a few things straight. I have never felt sorry for you. I did not choose a school far away from you until you told me to. Everything we discussed stayed between us, and I would never have freaked over kissing you. And I'll be damned if I let you run away from me again."
Seth’s eyes widened at the same time Jared crushed their lips together, searing him right down to his toes. Jared's arms became steel bands, and they held him tight. Dear god! He did not see this coming.

Cover Reveal & Pre-Order: Cranberry Pi an m/m contemporary novella #mmromance #glbt #coverart

A gorgeous new cover has come my way for a brand new release this month!

Feast your eyes on the lovely cover for Cranberry Pi
by the oh-so-talented Laura Harner

Release Date: November 21

Cranberry Pi is the first book in my new series, Linwood Academy. I'm rather pleased with the fact that it is also the LONGEST story I have written to date.

BLURB

As if starting a new job, picking up the reins of a disorganized former colleague, and moving back in with his parents while he saves for a down payment on a house of his own isn't enough, Cecil Trace has just discovered that part of the Art Director's job at the exclusive Linwood Academy is putting on a series of holiday pageants…with the first one celebrating Thanksgiving just three short weeks away!
He's got enough on his hands getting reluctant students ready to wow their parents and the community with their brilliance, and preparing a holiday showing of his own artwork at a local gallery, he doesn't need recalcitrant but brilliant math instructor Reese Cavelli arguing about every little detail.
While Reese understands the new Art Director's urgency, he can't allow Cecil to undermine his authority with the students. Reese can't help being an ass to the new art director, and he knows in part his behavior is due to his own insecurities, but it's also got a lot to do with the fact that the vibrant young artist is so damned sexy in his jeans and bohemian shirts. Every time he comes into contact with Cecil Trace, he finds himself tongue-tied and brusque, unable to think of anything to say that doesn't come out wrong.

Excerpt:
Damian
I LOVED it when it was evening and all was quiet and peaceful. No traffic noise intruded into the house, and in the lounge, the only sound was the slow ticking of the clock on the mantelpiece. Give me a mechanical clock any day. Not that I had anything against more modern timepieces, but there was something soothing about the sound. The clock had been my grandmother’s, and I took loving care of it, making sure it was oiled and wound. Right then my evening was perfect: the tick of the clock, a glass of Cabernet on the table next to me, and a worn, hardcover Sherlock Holmes novel in my hands. I’d lost count of how many times I’d read The Hound of the Baskervilles, but re-reading a favorite book was a warm, comforting experience. The wine created a warm glow inside me. I took another sip.
And then my phone rang.
The temptation to ignore its clamoring call was huge. I was happy, comfortable, and anyone ringing me at home during the evening had to want something. All my friends knew my routines, especially since Oliver....
I closed my eyes. I could almost hear that edge of amusement in his voice. “You going to answer that, Sir?” And yes, I could see the gleam in his eye as he awaited my reaction, tense in nervous anticipation. Brat loved pushing my buttons. With a sigh, I picked up the call.
“Damian? It’s Leo. We need your help.”
I placed the wine on the table. “What can I do for you?” My interest was piqued immediately. It had been quite a while since the co-owner of my BDSM club had called me at home.
“Sorry to disturb you, but you were the first person I could think of. We have a boy. He’s nineteen, and he needs help.”

K.C. discovered erotic fiction in 2009, where the purchase of a ménage storyline led to the startling discovery that reading about men in love was damn hot. In 2012, arriving at a really low point in life led to the desperate need to do something creative. An even bigger discovery waited in the wings – writing about men in love was even hotter...
K.C. now writes full-time and is loving every minute of her new career.
The laptop still has no idea of what hit it... it only knows that it wants a rest, please. And it now has to get used to the idea that where K.C goes, it goes.

Parker Williams:
Parker Williams began to write as a teen, but never showed his work to anyone. As he grew older, he drifted away from writing, but his love of the written word moved him to reading. A chance encounter with an author changed the course of his life as she encouraged him to never give up on a dream. With the help of some amazing friends, he rediscovered the joy of writing, thanks to a community of writers who have become his family.

Parker firmly believes in love, but is also of the opinion that anything worth having requires work and sacrifice (plus a little hurt and angst, too). The course of love is never a smooth one, and Happily Ever After always has a price tag.
