We’re reading Love

Evan turned to his husband. “You know I
love you, right?” Daniel lifted his eyebrows. “Well?” Daniel nodded. “And you
trust me.” It wasn’t a question.
Daniel stilled. “Yes, I trust you.” His
eyes narrowed. “Ev?”
Evan took a deep breath. “Then I want
you to ignore anything you see or hear for the next part of the evening.”
“Why?” There was an edge to Daniel’s
voice that John hadn’t heard before.
Evan took hold of Daniel’s hands.
“Because I’m about to lie my arse off, okay?” He fixed Daniel with an intense
look. Daniel regarded him in silence for a moment and then nodded once. Evan
sagged in his chair. “Thank you, sweetie.” He leaned forward and kissed Daniel
on the cheek. He met John’s gaze. “This goes for you too. Don’t believe
anything you see or hear, all right? I’ll explain later.” He got to his feet
and walked toward the bar.
John bit his lip. I have a bad feeling about this.
Some of the tables had been cleared away
to reveal the highly polished wooden dance floor. Couples were already moving
slowly together around the floor. Brett stopped as he caught sight of Josh and
Chris dancing together, their heads touching. They look so beautiful. The thought made his heart ache. It wasn’t
their physical beauty that caught his eye—it was the sight of two men in each
other’s arms, oblivious to the rest of the world. Their fellow dancers paid
them no mind, which was refreshing.
“They look good together, don’t they?”
Brett turned to Evan, who was standing
beside him, his gaze fixed on Josh and Chris. “Yes, they do,” he admitted.
He was surprised when Evan stroked a
finger casually down his arm. He jerked his head back. Evan regarded him
calmly, those piercing blue eyes so reminiscent of John’s.
“It’s okay,” Evan said softly. “They
can’t see us.” He trailed a finger up over Brett’s bicep. “You obviously take
care of yourself.” Brett couldn’t miss the almost purring note of approval.
He found his voice at last. “You’re a
married man.” And a very attractive one.
“This is true.” Evan locked eyes with
him. “But we have an arrangement, Daniel and I.”
Brett’s heartbeat quickened.
“Arrangement?”
Evan nodded. He moved his hand under
Brett’s dinner jacket and caressed his arse. Brett caught his breath.
“We have a very open marriage. He plays,
I play….” That hand squeezed him gently. “And now and again, we invite someone
else to play with us.” Evan smiled invitingly.
Brett swallowed. Oh, fuck…. It wasn’t
that he was immune to Evan’s charms—if anything, his cock was like steel—and it
certainly wouldn’t be the first time he’d taken part in a threesome, not by a
long shot. But it felt wrong.
“I… I’m going to have to decline,
flattering though the offer is.” He took a step back, and Evan slowly withdrew
his hand. He cocked his head to one side.
“Well, I can’t say I’m not puzzled by
your reaction.” Evan glanced downward to his crotch. “Because that doesn’t
lie.” Brett’s breathing grew more rapid. Suddenly, Evan’s eyes lit up. “But
maybe the wrong brother is doing the asking.” He winked. “Is that it, sir?”
Brett forgot how to breathe altogether
for a moment or two. Fuck…. And then Evan’s words sank in. The wrong brother?
John?
And then Evan’s whole manner changed.
Gone was the flirtatious, sexy man who’d just felt him up. Evan regarded him
with a gentle smile.
“It’s okay, Brett. You can breathe now.”
Brett stared at him. Slowly, his brain
started to function again. “You… you….” He struggled to find the words.
Realization dawned. “You and Daniel don’t have an open relationship, do you?”
Evan shook his head. “He’s my whole
life.”
Brett couldn’t get his mind off Evan’s
question. “John…. Is John gay?”
Evan’s smile increased in intensity.
“That’s something you’ll have to ask him.” He leaned closer and whispered. “But
I think you already know the answer, don’t you?” He straightened. “You
might want to take a moment before you join us at the table.
I think you need to calm down first.” He gave Brett an apologetic look. “I’m
sorry. I probably shouldn’t have done that, but I couldn’t help myself—I had to
know.” And with that, he walked off toward their table.
Brett stared after him, his thoughts
still in disarray. Two things were burned into his brain. He’d just outed
himself—and the man who had captured his interest was gay. Possibly.
Hopefully?
