Story Orgy Presents: Interviews with Hank Edwards

Story Orgy Presents: Interviews
with Hank Edwards

Good morning, Story Orgy Fans!  I’d like to introduce Hank Edwards, whom we all know and love, as the author of Wicked Reflections,  here to talk about "Plus Ones” and “Bounty”, both of which sound fantastic.
First, let's let the readers know a little about Hank.  Where are you from, Hank?  Detroit, MI
Tell us a bit about your family.  Youngest of three children, I have two sisters.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?  My sense of humor.
Ahh. Readers are familiar with that sense of humor!  LOL.  What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?  “Great power involves great responsibility.” I think it’s something people who have risen to power tend to forget.
Hmmm.  That quote sounds very familiar.  When and why did you begin writing?  I began writing very young.  I was probably 9 or 10.I read a lot and I always wanted the books to continue so a lot of times I would write my own sequels to favorite books or movies.
When did you first know you could be a writer?  That I COULD be a writer, not until high school when I received great comments on a ghost story I wrote for a contest.
What inspires you to write and why?  I love to tell a story. The characters basically tell me what to do and I just have to find the time to sit down and do it.
What genre are you most comfortable writing?  I like humor and paranormal/suspense.
Who or what influenced your writing over the years?  Stephen King was a huge influence. I love how he takes ordinary people and creates extraordinary events or worlds for them to inhabit.
And I think we see that influence in Wicked Reflections.  What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?  Finding the time. I have a day job and friends and family to make time for as well, it’s tough sometimes to fit it all in.
Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it?  There were a lot of edits returned from my editor. I would say I learned not to throw in scenes that don’t advance the plot just because they’re funny. She really helped me pare it down to what was needed to tell the story.
What is your greatest strength as a writer?  I think I write engaging scenes of suspense and humor, and I think readers really enjoy my characters. I hope they will love Evan and Paul from “Plus Ones,” as well as Evan’s friend Miggy and Paul’s brother Adam. I really did like spending time with them. And, of course, there’s always my clumsy fluffer with the heart of gold, Charlie Heggensford.
Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it? YES! I usually find exercise helps me blast away the writer’s block. Or sometimes, if I’m blocked on a particular story, I’ll just start writing something new, maybe a new short story, and I’ll find that the problem I was having in my other writing is worked out.

Tell us your latest news?   My novel, “Vancouver Nights,” the third Charlie Heggensford adventure, is a Lambda Literary Award Finalist. My partner and I are attending the award ceremony in New York City the last Thursday of May and we’re both very excited because he put together the cover for the book. Also, on June 14th my new novel, “Plus Ones,” will be available for purchase from Loose Id. It’s a romantic comedy centered around a summer of gay weddings in the state of Michigan.

Can you share a little of your current work with us? SEE BELOW

How did you come up with the title? I came up with the title first, I think I heard it used in a movie or TV show, and from that the idea was born.

Amazing when it happens like that, that a single word or phrase sparks a whole novel.  Can you tell us about your main character? Evan Dresden is looking to settle down, but he can’t seem to find the right man. He’s tired of the bar scene and one night stands. He has some good friends who are determined to help him meet Mr. Right, but Evan’s starting to sour on the prospect of finding anyone at all.

How did you develop your plot and characters? I get a general feeling for the characters and the plot and as I write the book the characters kind of reveal their secrets and ambitions to me and the plot builds from there.

Who designed the cover?  Justin James designed the cover, and I love it!

Who is your publisher?  Loose Id. This is my third book with them and I’m very excited and grateful.

Why did you choose to write this particular book? I really wanted to write a romantic comedy with fun characters readers can relate to.

What was the hardest part about writing this book?  The edits. It was tough cutting out some scenes, but I understood why it needed to be done.

Did you learn anything from writing this book and what was it? I learned not to add characters or scenes for the sake of entertainment. Always move the plot forward.

How do you promote this book?  Facebook, Twitter, my website and blog, and some local book signings as well as a blog tour.

Where can we purchase the book?  For the months of June, July, and August, from Loose Id exclusively; after that it will be available on all other e-book sites.

Will you write others in this same genre? Most definitely! I love it.

Have you included a lot of your life experiences, even friends, in the plot? I included a few situations that were very similar to events that happened to me, mostly the embarrassing ones, and Miggy is modeled after a very good friend of mine I’ve known for decades.

What are your current writing projects now? I’m currently working on several projects. One is a sequel to my novella “Holed Up,” and I’ve also completed the first draft of the first book in a series I’m calling the Venom Valley Series. I’m thinking of self-publishing these titles as they deal with vampires and zombies in the Old West and can be a little darker in tone than some publishers like.

Are you reading any interesting books at the moment? I’m currently reading “Under the Poppy” by Michigan author Kathe Koja and loving it.

How do you deal with rejection letters?  Rejection letters are a way of life for a writer. I wish they would add more detail as to WHY the work was rejected so I could try to improve, but mostly I just turn back to my submission list and look for another place to ship the book off.

What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out?  I love using Scrivener for Mac. It’s an awesome writing tool, and has really helped me organize my ideas and keep all my research in one place. I love it!

What do you do to unwind and relax? Exercise, TV, movies, spending time with my partner and friends.

What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing? I’ve met a great group of people because of my writing, and attended some awesome conferences. And I get checks for writing!

If you could leave your readers with one bit of wisdom, what would you want it to be? Be good to yourself and others, and don’t take yourself too seriously. Take time to laugh and enjoy those around you. Sometimes family can be the people we choose to be with and not the people we were born to.

Plus One's Blurb:
Evan took a breath and dropped his gaze, his system flooded with adrenaline and testosterone. He had never experienced anything like this before and had no idea how to deal with it. When he met Paul’s gaze, it was like a magnet grabbing steel, and he could not look away. What the hell was this about?
A shout of surprise that sounded like it came from John in the upper level of the house roused Evan from his internal musing, and he grabbed both drinks. Holding up the chilled glasses, he flashed Paul his brightest smile and said in a singsong voice, “And that, class, is how you make an old-fashioned and a whiskey sour. Questions?”
Paul chuckled and reached out for his drink, but before he could take it, Evan heard a sound from behind him followed by shouts of alarm. It was a familiar, galloping sound, and a knot of anxiety tightened inside him as he realized what it meant. He tried to will his legs to move, but he wasn’t fast enough, and before he could set the drinks on the bar or press himself against the wall, a heavy, solid body struck him from behind, furry legs clamping around his waist and driving him to the floor. As he collapsed beneath his attacker, Evan saw the contents of both drinks fly from their glasses as if in slow motion, and watched helplessly as the sticky, sugary bronze of the old-fashioned coated Paul’s chest and the concoction of sour mix and whiskey splashed across Paul’s crotch.
Then he was on the floor, the empty glasses rolling away across the cream carpet as the large, furry form started humping him from behind. He knew it was Bandit, of course -- Alden and John’s Great Dane that only humped Evan and did so every chance he got. Evan tried to break the dog’s grip around his waist, but the animal was strong, and he could not squirm away as Bandit humped him fast and rough.
People streamed into the room, drawn by the commotion, and laughter soon followed. Evan’s cheeks grew hot in embarrassment, and his forehead burned where it scraped across the carpet from the force of Bandit’s motions. He heard Alden enter the room, scold Bandit, and shout to John for help. Evan’s hips lifted and fell as Alden tugged repeatedly on the dog’s collar, trying in vain to dislodge the Dane. The crowd in the room laughed louder, none of them offering to help, and Evan’s forehead scraped harder across the carpet.
Finally Evan felt the dog’s grip on his hips loosen, and he crawled away. He got to his feet and turned, attempting a dignified stance despite the situation. The crowd grew quiet, most of them holding a hand over their smiles, some with eyes watery from the force of their laughter. The man Evan had been talking with in the other room -- the man with the very white teeth -- Bill, if he remembered correctly, knelt near the fallen glasses, one hand hooked alongside Alden’s through Bandit’s collar. The dog coughed and gagged from the force of Alden and Bill’s struggles, tongue hanging out and brown eyes gazing up at Evan with unabashed glee. Paul was nowhere in sight, and Evan felt an odd mix of relief and disappointment.
“Are you all right?” Bill asked, genuine concern on his face.
“Well,” Evan said with a huff as he smoothed out his clothes, “that wasn’t any worse than my junior prom.” The room exploded in laughter and, smiling as brightly as possible, he nodded to the group and turned for the stairs, meeting John in the hallway on the way.
“Evs! We won!” John exclaimed and grabbed him in a hug that forced all the breath from his lungs.
“What?” Evan’s mind was focused only on the embarrassment he had just endured and unable to remember why he had even come to their house in the first place. “Who won?”
John pulled back and frowned at him. “We won. All of us. They just announced that the gay marriage bill passed. We actually won!” John squinted at him. “What happened to your forehead?”
Evan took a breath as his memory came back. The gay marriage bill had been on the Michigan ballot before and lost, but this time the gay organizations had funneled truckloads of money into supporting the bill, and it had apparently paid off. He gave John a small smile and patted him on the shoulder. “That is great news. Excuse me just a moment, won’t you?”
He took the stairs two at a time, cringing as he heard someone say to John, “Damn, after all that, I’m surprised he can take the stairs that fast.”

Coming Soon from Breathless Press

Telling the TRuth
Truth or Dare
book 2

The Blake brothers have upped the ante in their weekly poker game. The week Terry loses, he finds that paying his debt of telling the truth sets him free to pursue a fantasy he never dreamed could be reality.

Terry has lived his life according to the guidelines, by studying accounting, getting an MBA, and working for the family business. And while his work has its own rewards, something has been missing, and his eyes have only just been opened to what--or rather who--that could be.

Terry can handle any dare his brothers dish out, but the demand for Truth is a different matter. Unable to hide behind his pristine reputation and fancy business suit, Terry is honor bound to divulge secrets he’s been ashamed to admit even to himself in the privacy of his own bedroom.

Twins Dex and Trick have finally found acceptance for their relationship in the homes of their friends. They would never do anything to jeopardize that newfound sense of belonging. Fooling around with Mischa’s prissy, domineering, oh-so-sexy older brother is risky. A one night stand might be okay, and the boys happily indulge, but then close ranks afterward, pushing Terry aside.

Terry isn’t going to back down without a fight. He’s convinced that Dex and Trick are meant to be his, and he’ll do whatever it takes to make them realize all the safety and protection they need can be found in his arms.

Story Orgy Presents: Interviews with Patricia Logan

Story Orgy Presents: Interviews
Talking with Patricia Logan today.
Who is here to share some information about herself, how she writes, and what she's currently working on.  You can find Patti online at Naughtypassions.blogspot.com

What is your favorite quality about yourself?

I think I’m most proud that I have been a good mother. I’ve tried to raise my kids to be great people with loving and unprejudiced values. I encouraged their differences and it has helped them to grow up with great feelings about who they are and what they can do. Nothing holds them back. They are climbers and resilient fighters with huge loving hearts.

What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life? I’m most proud of becoming a published author at 49 years of age. It’s a great rush to have someone believe enough in your intellectual property, that they pick you up and sign you to a book deal. That first acceptance was one of my best days.

When and why did you begin writing? I began writing in middle school. I was encouraged by the teacher because he told me that I had a great imagination and talent. Then, I put it aside for thirty years while I grew up, went to college, got married and had kids. When my career as a mortgage broker tanked in 2007, I seriously considered going back to nursing. I was jumping over a chain link fence at my daughter’s soccer game and tore my left ACL which required knee surgery. That laid me up for about two months and so I just voraciously ate through my library at home and once I recuperated, I thought, you know, you could write one of these vanilla romances.

I did. And let me tell you, that sucker was so bad that I got 39 rejection letters so I put it aside and wrote another one, then another. I started researching my genre, M/M and found out that it was the hottest sub-group of erotica and erotica was the hottest sub-group of romance. My brain told me, what the hell are am I doing trying to compete with the 400,000 vanilla romance submissions that publishers receive every year when I could be writing my favorite genre anyway? I wrote my first M/M book in 26 days. It practically wrote itself. That was in 2009 and came out last year.

What inspires you to write and why? The love I have for gay men is what inspires me to write M/M. I want to give them the dignity and respect that so many are lacking because of this crazy world. And I wanted to worship their bodies with my words.

Tell us your latest news? My second book in the Armadillo series “Undercover Nights” was released March 9th. The last in that series “Warrior Nights” will be released June 8th this year. That is a fun series and the third book is my first M/M/M ménage. That was a bit of a challenge. I wanted to make the sex real and the emotions between my guys real. I think it works.

I also have a standalone epic of 133K words called Gypsy Knight coming out October 12, 2011. That’s a medieval romance that takes place during the crusades. It is a M/M/F ménage.

I also have organized an anthology with the wonderful Ga Hauser, Sue Brown, Sammy Jo Hunt and Lisa Worrall. That is titled “Chasing the Dream” and will be submitted to Dreamspinner this summer. I’m thrilled to be working with such a talented lineup of M/M writers.

I have another series of 3 or 4 already under way. The first has been submitted. That’s called “Captive Lover” and the others are in synopsis form or WIP’s. Whew!

How important do you think villains are in a story? I think villains make the story. I have villains in all of my titles. Sometimes it’s a real physical threat to my guys but sometimes it’s just jealousy or misunderstanding. I like angst in my stories. I learned that from some of my very talented writer friends.

What books have most influenced your life? I think the very first M/M title I ever picked up and read through in one furious story orgy of my own was the most influential book I’ve ever read. I have no idea what the title was. There are so very many now. I find it difficult to read anything else now. It’s my drug of choice. From the moment I opened it until the moment I closed it later that night, I was riveted to the words on the page and the male love scenes held me spellbound.

Are you reading any interesting books at the moment? I’m reading “Chance to be King” by Sue Brown and “A Wicked Encounter” by Sammy Jo Hunt.

How do you deal with rejection letters? Before I was published, I couldn’t figure out what the problem was. I got 39 in a row on my first HET book. Since I started writing M/M I’m almost embarrassed to say that everything I’ve submitted to date has been accepted. I think is has to do with the fact that I love that genre and it shows through in my work.

What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out? Meet your favorite authors on Face Book and other social media sites. You learn so much from others that are already published and it’s a great way to promote your work as well as have fun and make true friendships.

What do you do to unwind and relax? I read and spend time with my youngest who’s 12. I almost lost her last year when she had to undergo emergency brain surgery. It slapped me right in the face and I learned darn quick just what was the most important thing on earth.

What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing? The opportunity to be at home with my family and spend more time with them.

If you could leave your readers with one bit of wisdom, what would you want it to be? Put your families and loved ones first guys, before anything else. Once they’re gone, you can’t get that time back again.

Here’s an excerpt from “A Very Good Year” my current WIP and the second in my new series. This is a M/M/M ménage title as well.

Carlo watched the play of emotions across Dmitri’s face. The lust was obvious and Carlo was amused that Dmitri schooled himself to try to hide it. The disgust was a surprise. What on earth didn’t this small town vintner see in a world famous man such as himself? It wasn’t that he thought over much of his assets; he was just confident. Carlo just knew that he was the premier wine critic in the world and had worked extremely hard to keep that reputation. It was hard not to come off in a hoity-toity manner when you knew what he knew. He tried to be as humble as possible when he wrote about the wines but one of the things about being a critic was that he became a target of criticism himself if his review was less than flattering. His reputation, thank god, remained solid because he knew what he was doing, but the lies about his love life got to him at times and had cost him more than one loving relationship. However he tried to keep his love life private, the tabloids seemed to love a gay billionaire and they did their very best to destroy his lovers as well as himself with lies and innuendo.

“I’m sure you would like a tour of the operation we have here,” Dmitri offered. “I’d like to accompany Jenny while she shows you around if that’s all right?”

“That’s exactly what we were gonna do Dmitri, come and find you and ask you to join us,” Jenny replied.

Carlo translated the phrase in his head and so was slightly slow in answering. When he did, he smiled. Dmitri swallowed hard. The man was stunningly beautiful, angelic of face and with two well placed dimples on his cheeks, it was all Dmitri could do not to tackle him and fuck him then and there. Carlo clapped his hands together and said “Meravigliosa,” which sounded close enough to the word “marvelous” that both Jenny and Dmitri nodded and turned to walk out from under the porch. Dmitri followed Carlo and Jenny toward the vineyard.

The stunning Italian had removed his suit coat and it was folded and draped over one arm. His high tight ass had Dmitri ready to faint. The cut of the outrageously expensive suit pants outlined a tiny thong which Carlo wore underneath the white fabric and the rounded curves had Dmitri sweating under the Stetson. He was certain that he had giant sweat circles visible on his cambric shirt, even though it was morning and the heat of the day hadn’t even arrived. He silently cursed the lustful longing for Carlo’s ass and thought better of the decision to join them on their little tour. The last thing Dmitri needed was to set a bad impression for Jenny or the Lazy E Vineyards. The sight of the Lazy E’s vintner jacking his cock off in the barrel hall probably wouldn’t earn Jenny the appraisal she needed but if Dmitri didn’t get away from this man, that’s just what was gonna happen. Holy shit what an ass!

Carlo stopped his broken English and wild hand gestures and turned to draw Dmitri into the conversation. It was everything he could do to stop himself from laughing out loud when he noticed Dmitri’s eyes riveted to his ass. It was even more amusing when Dmitri tried to pretend that he hadn’t been staring at it. Dmitri Hernandez and those mahogany curls and golden eyes was going to be hard to resist, but resist he must, at least until he’d written his critique. He didn’t want Dmitri or Jenny to get the impression that Dmitri’s performance in Carlo’s bedroom had anything to do with his opinion of the winery or its vineyard.

Story Orgy Presents: Interviews with Johnny Miles

The Story Orgy is pleased to present our interview this week with the talented author of Casa Rodrigo and Lauderdale Hearts, Johnny Miles.  We're talking about Lauderdale Hearts in detail, but lets find out a little about Johnny first.

What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?
My favorite quote is from Auntie Mame, “Life's a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!” I think the reason why I like it is because it resonates within me. I'd love to be like her, taking life by the balls and hanging on! Alas, I often lack courage. But when there's something I really want to do and start to talk myself out of it, I try and bring up that quote.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?
My fifteen-year relationship with the most wonderful person in the world. My partner!
And people say gay marriages don't work? I'm here to prove them wrong.

Congratulations!  Fifteen years is a long time.  I can't brush it off, because I know being with someone that long takes more than affection.  It's work, dedication and compromise.  What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?
I think every bit of writing is challenging. From coming with a story and sticking to it, to sustaining plausibility and keeping the characters true to who they are. Then, of course, there's the entire process of submitting your story, the wait, the rejection or acceptance, not to mention the entire process that soon follows if your story is accepted. So, each step of the writing process offers its own challenges. But what a feeling when you see the cover art or see your name in print!

It's unequaled, isn't it?  What is your greatest strength as a writer?
In my life, many friend have told me that I'm empathic. That's probably a good quality to have because even if you're writing about imaginary people, you still want to put yourself in their shoes and feel what they feel. Or at least understand why they do what they do.

I guess that makes me a bit like Counselor Troi on Start Trek: Next Generation, huh? Only not as cute with the long curly hair and the tight jumpsuit!

Blink.  Tight jumpsuit?  If anyone can pull that off, I'm sure it's you.  Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Sure! This excerpt is from Lauderdale Hearts and it's my second m/m romance to be released by Loose Id.

Excerpt: Lauderdale Hearts
It was only after he stepped aside and let Ricky in, holding his bag of oils, that Blake thought he should go back upstairs and put some pants on or perhaps an oversize T-shirt. But it certainly looked as if Ricky didn’t mind.
While Blake pulled the front door closed, Bosco rammed his nose into Ricky’s crotch and sniffed and snorted.
“Bosco, no!” Blake reached for the dog’s collar and pulled him away -- though he had to admit, he couldn’t blame him. He would have liked to have done the same.
Oh, to be a fucking dog!
“Sorry,” Blake offered in apology but couldn’t stifle a grin. “He’s never done that. Usually he just sniffs ass.”
“It’s okay.” Ricky laughed. “I’m used to it. A lot of my clients have big ones. Dogs, that is.”
Blake drank in the sight of the Latin man standing before him. He had naturally tanned skin like caramel, and jet-black hair cropped high and tight. He was dressed in a short-sleeved polo shirt in hunter green that clung to every part of his torso. Blake noted the rounded shoulders, the defined arms, the chiseled chest. The material of his white jean shorts stretched and clung to perfectly sculpted legs. Blake couldn’t help imagining those legs thrown over his shoulders, those ankles around his neck.
Blake’s cock stirred for the first time in nearly two weeks.
Jesus, fuck. Not now!
“Nice boxers,” Ricky muttered, then cleared his throat.
“Sorry, man.” Blake covered himself as he flushed. “It’s…ah… I…just woke up a few minutes ago. You know how that is.”
“Yeah.” Ricky grinned slowly. “I do.”
Blake noted the young man’s appreciative eyes on his body, the way Ricky scanned him openly, boldly. The tip of Ricky’s tongue slithered out, enticing, as he licked his thick lower lip, then gently bit it.
“It’s okay, man,” Ricky said in a soothing tone. Blake swallowed, nervous and awkward. “So, are you guys lovers?”
“Wh-what?” Blake spluttered. “Who? Me and Derrick? Oh no. Noooo. We’re not lovers. We’re partners.”
Blake thought he saw a look of disappointment on Ricky’s face. The young man arched an eyebrow, and the grin disappeared. Then Blake realized what he had said and how it must have sounded.
“No, no! Not like that. We’re business partners.”
The glimmer of a smile once again appeared.
“Derrick’s a nice guy, but he’s totally not my type.”
“Oh yeah? What is your type?”
“You,” Blake replied, his voice soft and low. He’d meant to say guys like you, but apparently his mind had other thoughts. Blake’s heart was racing. It seemed to him they were standing too close. He could feel Ricky’s body heat.
Blake glanced down and thought he noticed Ricky’s bulge grow larger. He was pretty sure it hadn’t been that obvious before. He resisted the urge to reach out and cup it.
“Me, huh?” Ricky grinned sensually. He took a step closer. “That’s good to know. Very good to know indeed!”
Dear God! This is insane. What’s he doing to me?
Blake had never been one to shy away from a man coming on to him, but usually he was the one doing the pursuing. And this one was much younger. Ricky was all of… What? Ten? Fifteen years younger? Yet so incredibly confident. So cocky and self-assured. So fucking hot.
And the reaction his body was having! He was almost fully hard. His blood raced, and his heart thumped almost as loudly as when he’d had the heart attack. He could feel it hammering away.
Blake gulped.
“Uh, maybe…maybe I should just show you to the massage room?” Blake took a step back, suddenly scared and unsure. “There’s a table already set up in there.”
“Oh. Uh, okay. Sure,” Ricky replied. Blake heard disappointment in the young man’s voice and wanted to explain that nothing would give him greater pleasure, that it was the first time he’d been aroused and wanted to have sex since the heart attack, but this was a total stranger.
Yet he felt so comfortable with Ricky.
They were quiet as they made their way up the stairs. Bosco stayed below. Blake already knew from the night before that no amount of cajoling would get him up. Bosco didn’t like the open risers.
Blake imagined he could feel Ricky’s eyes boring into him. Secretly, he hoped his ass looked as good in boxers as he knew it did in briefs.
“Nice view,” Ricky said admiringly as they stepped onto the second floor.
“Thanks,” Blake said, blushing once more. That was something else; he hardly ever reddened over a compliment. Then he turned and noticed Ricky looking out over the railing toward the yacht.
Blake’s heart sank with disappointment.
“I think I’ll just…head on up to my room,” Blake said after clearing his throat. Ricky turned to him.
“That is, provided you don’t need anything else,” Blake added. He gulped and hoped it wasn’t visible.
“Uh,” Ricky started. He looked as if he might say something smart, witty, or flirty but then changed his mind. “I’m okay,” Ricky said quietly. “I’ve got everything I need in my bag. Thanks.”
Blake nodded and moved away slowly.
“Hey, uh, Blake?”
“Yeah?” Blake stopped.
What the hell is wrong with me? Why did I stop him from flirting and coming on to me?
He tried to tell himself it was the age difference.
“Maybe I’ll…” Ricky paused for a long, uncomfortable moment -- long enough to make him want to go up to Ricky and kiss the words out of his mouth.
Blake’s breath caught.
“See you around?” Ricky gave a weak grin.
Blake smiled and nodded. He was disappointed with his inability to make a move, but his chest expanded as a warm rush of promise filled his heart.
* * * * *
Blake went into his room, closed the door, then leaned against it. He exhaled sharply. There was only one reason he could think of for why he had stopped the banter. Certainly the age difference was something to consider, but it had never stopped him before.
Chickenshit! a voice taunted.
Blake picked up his iPhone and scrolled for his doctor’s number in New York. He dialed, unable to believe that of the seemingly hundreds of questions he’d asked, there was one crucial question he’d forgotten.
“Dr. Mellon’s office,” a pleasant female voice answered.
“Uh, yes, hi.” Blake spoke softly, afraid of being overheard. “My name is Blake Hudson, and I’m a cli -- I mean, a patient of Dr. Mellon’s.”
“I’m sorry, sir. Can you please speak up?”
Shit! Why the hell am I whispering? It’s not like they can possibly hear me in this big house!
Blake spoke more loudly and asked to speak to the doctor.
“I’m sorry, sir. Dr. Mellon is in surgery today. I can take a message for him if you like. He’ll be calling in for his messages later this afternoon.”
Blake wondered how it would sound to her and he suddenly felt self-conscious. But surely this wasn’t the first time the question had come up.
“Can you please ask him if I can…uh…if I can have sex? Er, with someone else, I mean.”
The woman was silent. Blake imagined her putting the phone on mute and bursting into laughter, perhaps sharing it with the others in the office, the nurses. Blake’s throat felt dry. He was about to hang up, when the woman spoke again.
“Your phone number, please?”
Blake sighed, realizing he had been holding his breath. He gave her his number.
“Are there…any other cardiologists there who can answer my question?”
“I’ll run it past her and have someone call you.”
Blake thanked her and hung up.
* * * * *
Time definitely passes much more slowly here than in New York, Blake thought impatiently. An hour and a half had felt like an entire day.
Blake shifted for the millionth time, striking what he hoped was a sexy and seductive yet casual pose on the chaise, just in case Ricky walked out onto patio after the massage.
Bosco had curled up at his feet, and the bowl Blake had filled with fruit earlier sat empty on a glass table beside him.
But Derrick walked out alone, wrapped in a white towel.
“Hello,” Blake said, trying to sound nonchalant.
“Mmm. Hello, yourself.” Derrick rolled his head and shrugged, grinning.
“I take it the massage was good?”
“Oh my God. Probably the best I’ve ever had.” Derrick pouted. “No happy ending, though.”
“Happy ending?”
“Yeah. You know.” Derrick crudely pretended to jerk off. Secretly, Blake was glad Ricky wasn’t that kind of masseuse.
“Still,” Derrick continued, “I suppose it’s more about the therapeutic value than getting off. Right? But it’s so intimate, and I get so damn horny when a hot guy like Ricky plays with my body.” Derrick trembled, then sighed. “Say, did you call the doctor? Do you know if you can get a massage?”
“How the hell should I know?” Blake snapped irritably. “I’m not even sure if I can have sex!” Then he looked up at Derrick, who grinned lasciviously. Blake cleared his throat.
“Oh!” Derrick teased. “I see. You liked Ricky, didn’t you?”
“No!” Blake replied, sounding much more emphatic than he needed to. “It’s just, you know, in case I hit a bar or something.”
“Yeah, right.” Derrick put his hands on his hips, then made his way to the chaise beside Blake’s.
“So where is Ricky, anyway?”
“He’s gone. Had to go to school.” Derrick sat and leaned back.
“School?”
“Yeah. He’s finishing up his bachelor’s in marketing.”
“Marketing? But that’s great! When he’s done, maybe we can offer him a position.”
“Two steps ahead of you, buddy. I already hinted at it, but either he doesn’t get subtlety or he’s not interested.”
“Oh,” Blake muttered, unable to hide his disappointment.
“But he asked about you,” Derrick teased.
“Oh?” Blake couldn’t resist breaking out into a smile.
“Yeah. He wanted to know if you were single.”
“Really? Did he ask anything else?”
“He wanted to know if you were a nice guy.”
“And?” The smile turned into a grin. “What did you tell him?”
Derrick arched his eyebrows and took a deep breath, as if for dramatic effect. He then glanced at Blake with an apologetic look.
“I told him you were a prick, had been married twice, and had a brood of kids back in New York.” Derrick said, deadpan, then burst into laughter.
“You asshole!”
“I gave him your number. He sounded pretty eager. Don’t disappoint him! Now c’mon!” Derrick jumped out of his chaise and rubbed his hands together. “I have a city full of hot men to show you and only a few hours to do it!”

What was the hardest part about writing this book?
The hardest thing about writing this book is putting myself in Blake's position as he was having a heart attack and recuperating from it. I've never had a heart attach before and pray I never do!

The book is available from Loose Id. http://www.loose-id.com/Lauderdale-Hearts.aspx. It's also available through Amazon Kindle and Are.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Hopefully, aside from the entertainment, I think an important aspect of the story is that all we have is the present. Life is short, so, go out there and live it!

That's a good philosophy to have.  Have you included a lot of your life experiences, even friends, in the plot?
Ironically enough, yes! I had a verbally abusive boyfriend, just like Blake and Ricky. It started off innocently enough but it grew. He kept putting me down until it got to the point where I no longer looked forward to coming home after work. When that starts to happen, it's pretty much over. I'm glad I got out when I did because I don't even want to think what might have happened to me had I stayed. Not writing books, I can tell you that much!

What are your current writing projects now?
I'm actually in between projects at the moment. I've subbed one and floundering between picking one of 3 possible stories to pursue. I can't say which one yet but hopefully it will allow me to have fun, push my limits as a writer and help me grow.

Are you reading any interesting books at the moment?
Oh, yes! I'm re-reading the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling and trying, frantically I might add, to finish them all by the time the last movie comes out. These are probably some of my favorite books.

Have to admit, I'm a big Harry Potter fan myself.  How do you deal with rejection letters?
LOL! Not well! Just ask my partner, he'll tell you. I turn into the biggest baby!

Do you have any advice for writers?
If you have to write, do it because you have to. Write because you must find out what happens next. If you're in it for the money…well, let's just say you might be disappointed because that so-called “success” doesn't happen overnight and just because our first book has been published doesn't mean we'll be saved from evil-day-jobs. Writing is a hell of a process and a large amount of work. Sometimes to the point where you're drained for days or weeks at a time! But in the end, when someone reads it and tells you what they got out of it or that they enjoyed it because…whatever the reason…it's so very satisfying. It's like love being poured all over you!

Sound advice.  I have always believed readers could tell if the author wasn't engaged during the writing process.  What do you do to unwind and relax?
I try and spend as much quality time with my partner, our dogs and our friends as I possibly can. Have a glass of wine or go for a walk through the neighborhood. I basically try to do things that make me focus on the moment so I can have a better appreciation for life, my home, my surroundings and, most importantly, my loved ones. And I guess this flows into the last question.

If you could leave your readers with one bit of wisdom, what would you want it to be?
Enjoy today. It's all we've got. It's the only guarantee. Tomorrow might never come so if there's something you've always wanted to do, something that makes you feel as if you'll die if you don't try, go for it! Provided you're not hurting anyone else, what have you got to lose? Even if you fail, you've succeeded because at least you tried when so many others do not. And if you succeed? Well…we'll just cross that bridge together when the time comes.

Reviews for Keeping House

I woke up this morning to find that Keeping House had taken over the number 1 spot on the bestseller list at ARe!

Just wanted to share some really awesome reviews that I found yesterday for Keeping House!

First there was this one from Night Owl Reviews, where Keeping House was named a Top Pick by reviewer Daisiemae.

"Keeping House by Lee Brazil is a fun, fast-paced and sexy story that kept me up well past my bedtime. "

Then the wonderful AJ Llewellyn pointed me to this one from

" with a good cup of tea and possibly iced buns, this was a pleasant way to spend some time."

"I read it and enjoyed the experience, to be honest I’m finding it harder to do that these days."

And then there was this one from BookingIt
Keeping House is a fantastic short story with surprising depth and lovable characters.  I only wish the story were a bit longer not because the story had not been told, but because I wanted more of these two great guys.  A definite must buy!

Mischa Blake is the green eyed, liberally-pierced, black-haired, Mohawk-wearing spoiled youngest son of a Hollywood producer and his actress wife. Mischa has made a terrible mistake. In a fit of childish pique, he's accepted a dare from his older brothers. The dare? Live on his own, supporting himself completely for a year without accessing his trust fund. No problem. Except Mischa has never worked a day in his life, hasn't finished college, and has absolutely no skills that he can bring to the table.

So when he sees Donovan's ad for a housekeeper/gardener, he has nothing to lose by applying, because really...how hard can it be?

Recipes I Love ~ Traditional Ham Soup

Recipes I Love ~ Traditional Ham Soup

This is a what to do with the leftovers from Easter dinner recipe.  After you've eaten all the ham sandwiches, ham and cheese omelets, ham quiches, and ham scalloped potatoes you can stomach that is.

1 cup diced onion
1T minced garlic
6 cups ham broth
1/2 t black pepper
3 cups shredded cabbage
2 potatoes, diced-  note- I use red and don't peel them...
2 carrots, diced
2 cups diced ham
2 T chopped fresh parsely
1 t caraway seed
dash of dry mustard

saute onions and garlic in oil till softened
add remaining ingredients
cook over low heat until potatoes and carrots  are tender...

You can use chicken stock in place of the broth if you don't have the time or desire to simmmer a ham bone for 12 hours to make the broth.

According to Rachel Ray- you can use apple cider...haven't tried that myself... if you do, drop me a line and let me know how it turns out, ok?
