The Story Orgy Presents: Interviews with GA Hauser

Story Orgy Presents: Interviews  with GA Hauser

Good morning, Story Orgy Readers!  Today we have a special guest who's come to share some insights about writing and her new work.  Welcome, to The Story Orgy, GA Hauser! We don't have any prompt words for you, but maybe a few questions would suffice.

So, here's a random beginning.  GA, what is your favorite quality about yourself?

I think it’s my tenacity and self-discipline. I have a tendency to grab onto a dream with my teeth and never let go. I also write every single day.

Every day, huh? I stare at my screen a lot more than I actually write.  I admire that you can do that.  When and why did you begin writing?

I began writing stories at a very young age. They were naughty, so I ripped them up before anyone read them. I wrote primarily because I couldn’t find anything published at the time that fulfilled my fantasies. Now the whole man love market is flooded with stories that include gay sex and romance. Not when I was looking it wasn’t! So, I wrote my own. I suppose that was what began the idea of becoming a writer.

It is a new world for romance  today isn't it?  I know there wasn't much like what I like to read available twenty years ago.  What inspires you to write and why?

I’m inspired by many things. The feedback I get from people, showing me that my work has touched them, is a very strong influence. I also love to give readers what they want. Like I said above there is a real craving for manlove romance, and I enjoy the fact that anyone can be a hero in my work. And well, it’s just plain fun!

That makes me smile!  It's true isn't it that there's standard hero that seems to be cut and pasted into most romance novels?  I love stories about unique people, because we are all individuals.  How many billionaire businessmen do some publishers expect us to believe are out there?  LOL. What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?

Keeping it real. Calling or talking to people who are in the profession I am writing about. Though I have been many things in my life, when I wanted to write about LA lifeguards, I called the LA lifeguards and asked! They were appreciative I didn’t use Baywatch as my guide!

Well, I know since you spend seven to eight hours a day writing you must have something new in the works.  Tell us your latest news?

I have several projects cooking right now. Since the release of my first shape-shifter, Of Wolves and Men, I will be getting the sequel ready for release soon.
Also, I am working on Mr. Right at the moment, and releasing My Best Friends Boyfriend in May. Then! Book 9 of the Action! Series in on the list to complete.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Blurb for My Best Friend’s Boyfriend:

If Gavin Mecklenburg thought his job of working on high voltage power lines in Seattle was risky, he was taking an even bigger chance for a disaster by messing around with his best friend’s new boyfriend.
Trina Yamagachi was what Gavin called a ‘serial engager’. She chewed men up and spit them out, breaking off relationships with men just before her wedding day.
Gavin met Trina one afternoon while buying a watch for himself at the jewelry store she worked for. He and beautiful Trina became best friends instantly. But when Gavin realizes that his new handsome neighbor- the one he has become infatuated with- is Toby Montgomery, Trina’s latest conquest, Gavin doesn’t know what to do.
As friendships are tested, and choices become harder, Gavin has to wonder if getting involved with his best friend’s boyfriend is more trouble than it’s worth.
Sometimes the rules of attraction and lust win and sometimes they make you lose, but in the end, it’s all about finding the one you love and being true to your heart.

Now, that sounds like a great read!  That's a cute title... how did you come up with it?

Love the song by The Cars, ‘My Best Friend’s Girlfriend’. Sometimes it’s as simple as that.

And Gavin!  What a sexy name that is, masculine and sweet.  Can you tell us about him?

The main character is Gavin Mecklenburg. He’s a high power linemen with the Seattle Power Source company. He’s gay and best friends with a woman who is a man magnet. The woman character is based on one of my best friends from when I lived in Seattle. His apprenticeship with the power company has been all consuming until he meets his man.

Definitely not your typical hero.  How did you develop your plot and characters?

I spoke to an employee at the Seattle power company, (not with the made up name I used of course) and he gave me some great insight into the job of climbing power poles and working on high voltage lines. Awesome stuff!

So, my eyes keep trailing back up the page to that cover... its definitely sexy.  I do love denim.  Who designed it?

Me. I do all my own covers now. But if you check out the credits in each book, well, they are my characters! I wonder if anyone notices that.

Wow!  That is a sexy cover!  It always amazes me that people can do that themselves.  I'd spend hours pondering over which font to use and where to place the text.  Maybe we can talk more about that some other time?  Where can we purchase the book?

This book can be purchased on Amazon.com, Kindle, and All Romance ebooks and Smashwords.
Purchase    here.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Yes, Love is Never Wrong! No Matter the Form!! People need to get over their fears of same sex couples. It’s a subject I am passionate about.

How much of the book is realistic?

I don’t know! I think the action in some is directly from my personal experience. Like in Top Men. The calls the two officers went on, I did personally. So in each book a little of my life is given out. But I doubt you would know when, unless you know me very well.

Have you included a lot of your life experiences, even friends, in the plot?

I got to that a bit in the previous answer. Most of my novels are about family, friends, and acquaintances I have met over the years. It’s never safe to hang out with a writer. All your information ends up in their work!

What are your current writing projects now?

Right now I’m working on Mr. Right. It’s about a young man who was a toy boy for an older man, who just died. It’s a story about the young man’s regression to bad behavior over the net, etc, and his encounter with a therapist who is in a similar spot. The therapist has to deal with the ethics of falling in love/lust with this delicious young man.

I'd really like to read that.  Coping with loss is such a personal thing, its sure to be an emotionally engaging book.  Are you reading any interesting books at the moment?

I wish I had more time to read. After writing for 7-8 hours a day, I am too worn out to read. But I still try and pleasure read a bit.

I can understand that.  Do you have any advice for writers?

Yes, NEVER GIVE UP!!! I say that whenever anyone asks. You stop trying, you lose. Just because one publisher didn’t like your work, means another one will. Keep writing, keep trying.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

Run! I run every day, and without it, I’d go nuts. I am a very physical person and if I couldn’t bike, run, or exercise, I’d lose my mind.

What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing?

I never imagined I could do this and support myself. It’s an amazing journey to go from a little bit here and there, to an income. I am very lucky and have great friends and fans to keep me going.

So, GA, if you could leave your readers with one bit of wisdom, what would you want it to be?

I would have to say, thank you. Thank you for years of reading GA Hauser novels and giving me great feedback and wonderful reviews. And as for ‘wisdom’ never stop fighting for the things you believe in. Be passionate about civil rights. Believe that ignorance and intolerance will be defeated. Dream. Fight. Never give up trying.

That's a message that resounds on many levels.  Thanks so much for sharing your work adn yourself with us today!

Thank you so much for letting me do this interview. It means a lot to me to share my feelings and thoughts. GA

Character Interview: Sit Down With Mischa

Hey, readers!  We're here today with Mischa Blake from the recently released Keeping House.  If you haven't read it already you can find it here or here

You know, Mischa, a lot of people expected you to fail at this dare.  I don't just mean your brothers either.  I've gotten quite a bit of feed back about how people would have liked to see you at rock bottom.  People wanted to see you fail, to see Donovan save you .Do you think you hit rock bottom before you knocked on Donovan's door?
No.  I won't accept defeat.  As far as I’m concerned, that dare wouldn't have been lost unless I'd been forced to ask Terry for money.  And as for failure, I don't accept that.  I may have been naive and underestimated the world, but I'm not stupid.  I've been called resourceful and clever.

If your friends hadn't stepped in and helped you out, what would you have done?
Thank God for true friends, hmm?  I'd have called Essie at the manse.  The housekeeper, you know?  I was always her favorite.  She'd have helped me out.

*Chuckles*  Well then, a few more questions, and we'll turn the floor over to Havan- who has some questions of her own!  You ended up giving up recreational smoking out of respect for Donovan's wishes that you not use drugs in his home.  The story makes it seem like that was an easy thing to do, and easy choice to make.  Was it?
The choice was easy enough to make, but it was harder to follow through on than the story makes it seem.  Even now, I find myself longing to light one up when things get stressful.  But now I have even more reason not to smoke.  I don't want our son thinking its okay.

And, you made rather a fuss over the "plans" you had for that inheritance of yours.  I assume that your brothers handed it over to you as promised.  What did you end up doing with it?
They did.  And I didn't end up doing what I'd planned, which was to open up a club in Hollywood.  Instead, I funded an after school program at my son's school to provide tutoring and assistance to special needs children.  And I put some aside in a trust fund for him until he reaches the age of thirty-five.  I pay for my classes and living expenses out of my salary from Donovan for now, and when I graduate and get a teaching position, I'll be okay.  I don't need millions, so I'll be on the look out for good causes to donate to. I tried to give some to Dex, Trick and Bella, but they shut me down.  Turns out they have all they need, too.

Okay, if you're ready for this, I'll turn you over to Havan now.
Bring her on.  I'm ready for anything!

Now Mischa . . . if I had a dime for every one who said that . . . um yeah . . .

Alrighty then, first impression time . . . You knock on the door for your interview and Donovan opens it . . . Sexy... frazzled... sexy... I was anxious about the job, but I couldn't focus, because he was so fucking hot

Hmmmmm . . . yeah I can understand your dilemma . . . which coincidentally brings us to my next question.  Honestly - what was the very first thought that popped into that adorable head of yours when Donovan blurted out he was gay then went on to call himself a flamer? How could I be this lucky? Seriously.  That was it.

Honey, that's really enough though isn't it . . . *giggles* . . . So now you know his preference then Donovan kisses you madly at the table and leaves you hanging . . . but the trouble is he left himself hanging also . . . so out of curiosity, and with the knowledge of what Donovan did to quench his thirst for you . . . tell us - how thin are the walls in his house? *knowing smirk*
I had no idea about that.  He told me later, but... I think the walls must be pretty thick.  And I’m sure he had no idea what I did either

*stops and stares . . . wipes sweat from brow and clears throat* . . . Sorry, but damn those visuals you just gave me are . . . well . . . damn.

Okay where were we?  *rifles through papers with shaky hands* . . . a yes here we are, if you could change one thing about Donovan what would it be? I'd have to say I'd change his sloppiness.  He could definitely use some picking up after himself skills.

Okay that brings me to this next question, have you been able to teach Donovan what a laundry hamper is? And did you ever get your laundry chute? lol

No, and no.  However, Donovan is bribe-able and will help get the stuff down to the laundry room

Bribe-able huh?  That makes me wonder . . . TMI time - What's Donovan's favorite place for you to nibble and what reactions can you force out of him?

Lol- sorry, honey, but I don't want to sleep on the couch for the next few days, so I'll have to pass on that one.

Oh pooh!  Okay I'll respect that . . . but how about just a little sumthing sumthing for your adoring fans . . .  Alternate universe time - Donovan comes to you and admits he wants a piercing . . . exactly where would you put that hole in his body?
Tongue.  No doubt about it.  A pierced tongue is incredible.

*watches as Mischa smiles at me while clacking his tongue stud against his teeth* . . . now you are just being naughty!  Please continue!  *smiles and fans face just a bit*

Oh but I must say, congratulations on becoming a father! Do you and Donovan plan to add any more little rugrats to your family?  Not till after I graduate.  Then yeah- a few more kids would be awesome.  I don’t think, though that I want to go the route Terry and the twins took.

You have to go the route that feels best for you!  I respect both your decisions and Terry and the twins!

Between us two, exactly what hair products did you use that can keep your spikes alive and kicking in the rain? Now this is a serious question because damn I need to get some of that! I don't really know- a stylist did them for me and gave me some glue to use.  I don't recall the name. I dont' favor that hair style any more.

And speaking of hair . . . how long does it take you to do yours in the morning?

*runs hand over bald head* not long... a few minutes with a razor and I"m good these days.

I did notice your new do. . . *smirks* . . . by the way, shaved is ultra-sexy you know . . . Which makes me think . . . I would love to have heard Brandon's response to your new look!

And while I am talking about your brothers, well they are shits, but they are shits that love you . . . and thanks to a simple dare they inadvertently helped you find your own love. So keeping with the feel of your story . . . if you could dare Donovan to do anything what would your dare for him be?

I'd dare Donovan to quit the damn job, live off my trust fund and be the artist he is inside.  He's the most talented man, and I won't say he wastes that talent working in advertising, but he sure doesn’t use it fully.  Sorry, but this is the big argument in our household.  After his childhood he's afraid of being without a job.

*pats Mischa on the knee*  Give him time honey, he's a strong individual and you both are just starting your lives together.  But promise me that when you explore that area and more that maybe, just maybe, you will tell us all about it in a sequel perhaps?

Okay now time for my infamous Round Robin . . . you ready big boy?  *giggles*

Favorite sleeping position with Donovan? Sleeping? Or…

Swear word of choice? I’m spelling this out so I don’t’ have to pay into the cuss jar… F, U, C, K

Favorite tv show? *blushes*  Monster Bug Wars

Favorite body part? Mine, or his?

Shower solo or duo? Am I going somewhere afterwards?

Favorite Blake brother? Well, shit… Terry’s my closest brother, even though I think I have more in common with Dan.  Dan is… deeper than he seems, though.

Paddle or bare hand or none? Leather belt, thanks for asking…

Dream vacation spot? Hilton Head, South Carolina- I think Matt would like the beaches, the soft white sand and Donovan and I would enjoy watching the sunrise over the water

Barefoot or shoes?  boots

Recipes I Love ~ Creamed Corn

When I was kid, we kept a garden in the summer, and my mom canned and preserved and stored as much produce for the winter months as possible.  There is nothing that comes close to the deliciousness of a tomato picked fresh from the garden, washed off with the garden hose and eaten like an apple while you're running around playing.  One of our favorite ways to prepare garden produce is "creamed", with bacon, of course.  We do this with fresh and freshly frozen corn, but I'm sure any frozen or canned corn will do as well.

Creamed Corn

1 small onion chopped fine
1T butter
4 cups corn
1 cup whipping cream
¼ cup chicken broth
4 strips bacon, cooked, crumbled
¼ t pepper
¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
2T minced fresh parsley

Sauté onion in butter in large skillet for three minutes.  Add corn.  Sauté 2 minutes longer or until tender.  Stir in cream, broth, bacon, and pepper.   Cook, stirring, 7 minutes longer, or until slightly thickened.  Stir in cheese and parsley.

And- for versatility ~ It works with spinach too.

Creamed Spinach

apr. 20 oz. of spinach
2 T butter
½ cup chopped onion
2 t minced garlic
1 cup whipping cream
½ t black pepper
¼ t salt
¼ t ground nutmeg

Bring salted water to boiling.  Cook fresh spinach for 1 minute.  Drain well.  Pat dry with paper towels.  Coarsely chop spinach.

Melt butter over medium heat.  Add onion and garlic; cook 5 minutes longer or until onion is tender.  Stir in whipping cream and seasonings.  Bring to a boil and cook uncovered about 2 minutes, or until thickened.  Add spinach.  Simmer. Uncovered, about 2 minutes or until thickened.  Season to taste.

~
Right- then- enough in the kitchen this morning... I"m heading off to write... Have to make a story to go with this picture for the M/M Group at Goodreads.  Are you a member?

Welcome Em Petrova!

Foray into F/F
By Em Petrova

When I begin writing a story, I conjure my characters first. Usually they’ve been screaming at me to bring them to life for awhile, so by the time I put them onto paper, they’re completely 3D, with passions, past failures, quirks and pet peeves. And they’ve already told me long ago who they love. I don’t choose for them. Which means I write across the genres. From M/M, F/F, M/F and all kinds of ménage in between—I’ve written them all.

I happen to write F/F pretty often. There’s just something about two female characters seeing one another and getting that spark. Maybe they’ve come to terms with this sensual side of themselves. Maybe not. They’ll still argue and battle the odds to come together, but when they do so, you’d better believe it’s with smoldering passion.

In the past couple months I’ve seen an upsurge in f/f readers. It’s a genre men usually get aroused by (lots of fantasies involved there), but women are sometimes leery of reading about lovers with a complete set of X chromosomes. The media throws pictures of hot women together for the titillation of male genes, and often women feel exploited by this. We don’t want to feel our attractions might be for a man to get off on. But F/F writers plot stories with something completely different in mind—sensuality and emotion.

Another reason women might be hesitant to pick up a book with two heroines is they don’t think they can identify with the characters. These characters are mothers, sisters, aunts, BFF’s and even wives. For me, reading about other women always gives insight into my own life, whether it’s a funny line that helps me lighten up or a more provocative scenario that makes me analyze my actions. Through books, I meet new people and make friends.

Some readers may be afraid of getting turned on by what they’ve read. They might not feel ready to explore that secret desire or sail into uncharted territory. Telling your friend about the scorching scene in the hetero story you’re reading is easier than relating one about two women. But think about this: maybe your friend is reading the same book and is worried about ‘fessing up too.

The important idea to remember here is that most erotic romance isn’t about reality, but fantasy all the way. It’s about exploring your sexuality and maybe finding something turns you on more than you’d ever imagined, whether it’s being turned over a powerful man’s knee and having your bare ass beaten or diving between some curvaceous thighs. I personally love strong male bodies and the tools they use for work. But I’ve always found the female body beautiful, from the flare of hips to fluttering lashes. Most women can truly appreciate a stunning woman’s appearance, maybe in ways men don’t. After all, we know the work that goes into our bodie. Kickboxing for that tight ass, battling the baby tummy, exfoliating, waxing, and long hours spent in the salon.

Like other genres of erotic romance, the stories aren’t about the sex. The sex enhances the relationship—the icing on the cake. In the case of M/M, the hunky cake. And with F/F it’s decadent pie.

With the recent release of one of my F/F stories, DEUX-Book One of The French Kiss Chronicles, one of my beloved readers sent me a message, letting me know she loves my work but didn’t know if this one was for her. She wanted to try it, but was hesitant. I related much of what I have here to you. My reader took the challenge and later let me know how much she enjoyed the book.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Have you ever read a book with same sex lovers, whether it’s two hot studs or two luscious babes? Would you try one?

Released Today, May 13:
Trois-Book Two of The French Kiss Chronicles

When Jane's husband Ethan discovers his wife has been dipping into the honey jar, he demands a taste of the decadent pleasure. But Jane's new lover Margot is newly divorced and shies from the idea of being with another man. Frustrated, but willing to be patient, Ethan is allowed to watch his wife experience mind-blowing pleasure, vowing that soon he will have Margot in his arms.

However, there is more to Margot's hesitation than entering a relationship with a married couple. Her ex is pressuring her—leaving her leery of men and afraid of dragging Jane and Ethan into it. While battling her attraction for Ethan, she shoots down Jane's request to make their relationship a true threesome.

Can Ethan help Margot overcome her fear of him and gain her trust, as well as put a stop to her ex's harassment?

And The Prompt Is: Vol. 1

In all the excitement over the Keeping House release, I don't want to forget to tell everyone that The Story Orgy has published our first anthology this week!  And the Prompt Is vol. 1 is as I write this, number 23 on the Gay and Lesbian Romance top 100 at Amazon!  That makes me very happy, because proceeds from the sale of the book for the next 90 days go to The Trevor Project, a group near and dear to my heart.  If you haven't picked up a copy yet, you can find it here.

The first of the reviews are coming back in, and this is what one critic had to say about the genesis of this book:

The five authors here met through Facebook and there is another member, a non-writer who provides an image to the group The group is known as Story Orgy and they each write a story using three images or prompts and they post them on Monday mornings. It all seems very similar to a writing course I once taught and we did basically the same thing. They tried something new recently and invited their readers to submit prompt items to them and this is the result of that experience. They then decided to put the stories into this collection and put it on sale with proceeds going to the Trevor Project during the first ninety days. The results are amazing and I think when you read the stories you will agree with me.  (Read more at http://reviewsbyamoslassen.com/?p=5890)

Recipes I Love ~ Yellow Thai Curry

Recipes I Love ~ Yellow Thai Curry

This recipe is from Import Foods.  They have the most amazing recipes, street vendor videos, and quality ingredients.  You can see what I mean here.   But this is the sort of simple sexy food we enjoy on a Saturday night.  It's also the sort of thing that Lex is accustomed to preparing for Mack in A Beautiful Silence.  Give it a try some night when you'e in the mood for something spicy and filling.

The flavor of yellow curry paste is not much different than red or green, however we've recently discovered how much we like yellow curry. Yellow curry makes vegetables taste great in our opinion, and we've been eating more vegetables and less meat these days. Here is a basic Thai yellow curry with chicken and potato. It's also good with bell pepper, butternut squash, or any seasonal vegetable of your choice. Serve a generous portion and watch it disappear.

Ingredients
1 lb chicken, boneless and skinless, cut into bite-sized cubes
2.5 cups coconut milk
1 tablespoon Thai yellow curry paste
1 cup cubed potato
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons fish sauce
2 teaspoons palm sugar

Method
Boil the potato cubes in for about 5 minutes, drain and set aside. Pour 1 cup coconut milk into a soup pot. Over medium, heat the coconut milk until you see it boil, then add curry paste. Stir until fragrant. Season it by adding the palm sugar, fish sauce, and salt. Taste it and adjust flavors as you like. Add more chile paste to increase the spice level. Add chicken, cook, then add potato.

Add the remaining coconut milk, and continue to cook for another few minutes. Remove from heat and serve with jasmine rice.

Keeping House ~ The Prologue

The release of Keeping House is tomorrow- and in honor of the occasion I'm sharing a bit more of the story with my readers today.  Here's the prologue, which explains exactly how Mischa got himself into this mess in the first place!  Enjoy!

Prologue
Poker Night at the Blakes’
The door slamming behind Mischa Blake drew all his brothers’ eyes to him. He sauntered slowly into the room resisting the urge to run his hand over the hair he knew damn well still stood in four-inch spikes down the center of his head to the nape of his neck. He met each pair of familiar green eyes defiantly, refusing to look away.
“Hey,” he ventured, hoping his voice wouldn’t squeak.
“Damn it, Mischa!” Terry, Chief Financial Officer of the family-owned production studio that employed every member of the Blake family—except Mischa—immediately leaned away as Mischa took the seat at the green baize game table right next to him. “You stink! Where the hell have you been?”
Dan, the creative brother, studio scriptwriter, the brother most like Mischa in personality—though even that was a stretch—leaned in and sniffed appraisingly. “Somewhere that beer and pot are readily had in great quantities judging by the smell.”
Brandon, eldest brother, CEO of the studio, and all around royal pain in Mischa’s ass, frowned in disapproval. “Are you hanging out in those clubs again? Damn—the fucking paparazzi would love to catch you in some club. I can see the headlines now. Blake’s Youngest Son—Underage Alcoholic and Drug Addict—Caught in Gay Sex Club Scandal.
Mischa scowled in return, clicking the stud in his tongue against his front teeth, just because he knew it annoyed Terry. “Fuck you all. Are we playing poker or not?”
Wednesday night poker games between the Blake brothers were a long-standing tradition. With all the other traditions Mischa rebelled against, he couldn’t even fathom why he’d rather die than miss this weekly game with his brothers. Not that he’d let them know that, though. He made it a habit of either showing up late or insisting on leaving early—as though they were an added burden he could scarcely make time for in his busy life.
He reached to his back pocket for his wallet and realized almost immediately that he must have left it behind. Instead he reached for Terry’s wallet on the table to his right and rifled through it for cash to buy in.
“What the hell?” Terry demanded. “Are you broke already? I just deposited money in your account yesterday!”
“No. I’m good, for a while anyway. Just forgot my wallet. And you wouldn’t have to deposit money in my account all the time if you’d just loosen up the controls there and give me direct access to my accounts.” Millions of dollars in trust funds and he had to beg for cash from his brothers before he could make a purchase, at least until he was thirty-five—fifteen long years from now. He pulled a wad of hundred dollar bills from the leather wallet and tossed them on the table in front of him.
Terry grabbed the wallet back muttering dire insults under his breath. “You’re paying that back.”
Mischa smirked and clicked his piercing loudly. “You’ll end up owing it to me in a few hours anyway!”
Brandon, Dan, and Terry did the older brother thing. Their eyes met in a circle around the table that excluded Mischa, and he flushed.
“Want to put your money where your mouth is, kid?” That was Brandon, pushing his buttons as only an older sibling can. He hated being reminded he was so much younger than his brothers.
“I’m not a kid. I’m an adult, a licensed driver, and a registered voter.” He forced the words out trying not to scream them. He’d made the same protest so many times before.
“When you support yourself and don’t live off a trust fund you’re an adult. Until then, you’re another rich kid with too much money and time on your hands.”
“Hey! You guys all have trust funds, too! If having makes me a kid, then you’re kids.” He fucking knew he wasn’t going to win this one, he never did.
“We also have careers with futures. You have nothing but a trust fund.” That was Terry, putting in his two cents worth. Fuck that. Terry knew the value of a dollar—probably figured his two cents worth was actually worth two dollars.
“I’m an artist.” That was the answer he gave his mother every time she asked, and it always resulted in an indulgent smile. She and his father had taken it into their heads to retire in the French Riviera last year, but they had traveled and been on set so much during his childhood that Brandon had really stood in more of a parental role than his parents had.
    “Bull shit.” Brandon spoke again.
Mischa glared at Dan who was busily shuffling cards and had been for the past five minutes. “Fucking deal already so these assholes have something to think about besides my life and how they can ruin it.”
Dan cleared his throat and swiftly dealt the cards around the table.”You guys up for a little side bet?”
Mischa peeked at his cards then turned to Dan. His face was impassive, but there was no denying the fact that he was up to something.
Terry chimed in, equally impassive. “Money means nothing to us all, as the kid has pointed out, so how about we play for Truth or Dare?”
Brandon was nodding before Terry had even finished speaking. “Yeah, last hand of the night. Winner’s choice, loser pays a penalty to each of the players if he chickens out.”
It was a plot. Somehow, they were all in it together, and he was going to come out on the bottom of this some way. He picked absently at the loose threads in the rips of the five hundred dollar black jeans he’d bought, cut, and pinned back together while he considered his options. He had to make some move to salvage the situation, because protesting the game would mean he really was just a kid. The rules had to be established in the beginning and he had to find a way to slant them in his favor.
“And if the loser follows through, he gets to claim a boon from each of the other players.” It was the best he could do, and he knew exactly what boon he’d ask for too, because he was damn sure his brothers were going to manipulate him into losing. No way could his brothers come up with a dare he wouldn’t fulfill. He’d do anything. There was no truth he wasn’t willing to tell. This could definitely be worked to his advantage either way the chips fell. And if the cards fell in his favor tonight, they’d better look out because he had some pretty good dares he could lay on his superior older brothers.
Two hours later, his chances of being the big winner of the night looked good. Despite losing the last hand, he’d turned Terry’s thousand dollars into twelve thousand, and was easily way ahead of his brothers for the night.
Terry shoved his chair back from the table. “Okay, guys, I’m done. That was the last hand.”
Brandon and Dan made agreeing noises and Mischa stiffened in shock. Fuck. He was screwed.
“Wait a minute… You guys usually play a lot later than this. I mean, it’s only eleven o’clock!”
“Nope.” Brandon shook his head. “You usually leave around this time, and we always quit when you leave.”
If that was the last hand, which he’d lost, that meant he’d really lost.
Dan nodded in agreement. “And I make Brandon out as the winner of that hand, and you as the loser, squirt. So what’ll it be, Brandon, Truth or Dare?”
It was so fake. So fucking staged, it was obvious. He’d been set up. The first hand he lost was destined to be the last hand they played no matter how many it took or how few.
Brandon was a terrible actor. He smiled as he spoke lines that had probably been written by Dan expressly for the occasion. “Well, brother, I’m going to have to say Dare. But we should name the penalties
before I tell him the dare, don’t you think?”
“Oh, yeah,” Terry was outwardly smirking now. “You owe one penalty per player, kid. If you welsh on the dare, I get to give you a complete makeover, new clothes, new hair, whole new style.”
Surveying his brother’s “style” - navy blue Brooks Brothers suit, crisp white cotton shirt, Italian silk tie, and neatly trimmed blond hair, Mischa shuddered. He turned to Brandon, next brother in the row seated at the round table, and quirked his pierced left brow in what he hoped was a sardonic Spock-like inquiry and not a laughable dumb younger brother affectation.
Brandon smoothly responded with an elevated right brow and cough into his fist. “If you welsh, you take the assistant producer’s job I’ve been holding open for you since you graduated high school. Join the family business and make yourself useful.”
Damn. That was even worse. He held his breath momentarily before turning to Dan. Dan could swing either way. He was the brother who understood Mischa best, but he was also the cleverest, most devious, and creative of the brothers. No doubt he was the mastermind behind this whole plot.
Dan smiled broadly, tapping the playing cards against his chin gently as he considered his youngest brother. “If you welsh, brother, you attend the college of my choice for a full four years—or until you attain a degree, whichever comes first.”
“That’s a bit harsh!” Mischa protested. “In exchange for a single hand of cards, you guys expect to be able to run my life to suit yourselves for an infinite amount of time?”
“Oh, no,” Brandon interjected smoothly. “We expect you to honor your debts brother. Are you saying that you can’t meet the dare? You don’t even know what it is yet.”
Good point. Given the penalties though, Mischa was pretty sure the dare was going to be something he would really hate.
     “Okay. What’s the dare?”
They did it again, the older brother silent communication thing. This time Dan broke the silence.
“We dare you to get a job and support yourself without resorting to your trust fund for a whole year.”
Mischa’s mouth fell open. “That’s all I have to do? Get a job?”
Terry shook his head. “No. You have to support yourself. No more sending your bills to me to pay. No more monthly deposits into your account. Take care of yourself.”
If Terry had deposited his usual allowance into his account yesterday, that meant he had fifty thousand, plus the twelve on the table in front of him to get through the next year.                                                           “What if I can’t find a job? I mean, I’ll make every effort to find one, but I don’t get one?”
“Nope. Have to get a job.” Brandon was insistent.
“But I have plenty of money to get through a year… even if I don’t find a job.”
Terry shook his head again. “No. You don’t. You don’t even have any idea how much your lifestyle costs, do you? The money I put in your account this morning won’t last you a month at the rate you normally spend it. If you don’t find a job you’ll be living a very different lifestyle next month, with a new hairstyle and a new wardrobe to match.”
No freaking way. He’d find a way to beat his brothers at their own game.

Recipes I Love: Blueberry Crumble

Here's another quick and easy throw it together dessert for summer.  I guess you could use canned fruit just as easily if blueberries aren't readily available in your neck of the woods.  If it comes to that, you could use your favorite fruit, peaches, raspberries, blackberries, cherries.  It's all good.
This is the kind of easy and rustic, yet tasty recipe Mischa Blake would have found to serve to Donovan Holloway in my Keeping House book, soon available from Breathless Press.

Story Orgy Presents: Interviews with Julie Hayes

Story Orgy Presents: Interviews

Story Orgy is happy to Welcome the lovely and talented Julie Hayes to our first ever interview!  Julie is the author of Leonardo di Caprio is a Vampire and other tales.  We'll get into Leonardo later, but for now, tell us a bit about yourself.  What is your favorite quality about yourself?

I have this very analytical and detailed mind. You might even call me nosey. I’m not sure what quality this might be, but I always want to know why. Why something is, or why it was; why someone thinks it is that way, why they think the way they do, why things happen. I think it is that quality that often results in my having new stories to tell. As I wonder why, plots appear in my head as part of the why question, as I speculate on answers. Then naturally, I have to write about it.

I'm addicted to quotations, so I have to ask this. What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?

There are so many wonderful quotes, it’s hard to narrow it down, so I’ll use one that I have in my email signature, even though it’s from a film. “Data, data, data. I cannot make bricks without clay.”  It’s from the newest Sherlock Holmes film.   I like this because it says a lot to me about the thought process, and the writing process. You have to experience life before you can write about it, which is why so many authors don’t become published or even accomplished writers til after they hit forty, til they have time to actually live. I’m not saying that younger writers don’t have ability or credibility, but a certain amount of writing does come from life itself, and there is no substitute for living it. How can you write about things you haven’t experienced? No, not in the way of imagining it, because of course Tolkien never met a hobbit or saw an Ent walk, and sandworms only lived in Frank Herbert’s mind. But some things have to be felt—life, death, birth, happiness, sorrow, pride, embarrassment, and so on. What happens in your life becomes the clay that you use to form the bricks of your writing. Without clay, how can there be bricks?

Julie, what are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?

I am very proud of my children. They are wonderful people, with their own unique personalities, and their own lives. I wouldn’t change anything about them, even if I could. I’m proud of who they are, the good people they have become.

I"m always curious about how people began writing.  When and why did you begin writing?

I first remember writing about the age of nine, after hearing a story that the teacher read to us, about children on an island, with dinosaurs and danger. I sat down and wrote my own story. I’d been reading since I was two, it was just the next logical step to do it myself, to make up stories and write them down. I found it fascinating, and I still do.

Wow!  Reading at 2?  I'd say writing was the next step. Who or what influenced your writing over the years?

I think my writing has been largely influenced both by the books I’ve read, and by the movies I’ve seen. I’m a big film aficionado, of all sorts. When I write, I see what is happening in my hand, as if it were a movie unfolding in my mind, and it’s up to me to describe what I see, and what my characters feel, in order to make my readers see and feel the same things, hopefully. Hopefully, the more I write, the more I learn and improve upon my writing. In truth, I consider myself a cross between two writers—P.G. Wodehouse and William Faulkner. The first for his unusual wit, the latter for his long-winded style, which I happen to love. A strange marriage of influences, I’ll grant. Recently, I would add Charlaine Harris to this list of influences, for her own brand of appreciated humor, and her well drawn characters.

What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?

The biggest challenge I face is to stay focused on one thing at a time. I generally don’t. I have several WIPs at any given time, and plot bunnies waiting to be born. And ideas waiting to become plot bunnies. As a result, it may seem like I have no method to my madness, but I consider it, rather, a controlled chaos. I keep my deadlines in mind and stay ahead of them. And when it comes down to it, you can only really focus on one thing at a time when you’re writing. Then you move on.

Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

I think every writer’s had blockage at one time or another. Sometimes it’s a matter of life, sometime’s in something inside of you. I went for several years without writing, concentrating on children, husband and home. I missed my writing, and I started it up again. That was long term block. I’ve had times when I found that I could not write, so I would watch something instead, and fill up, so to speak, so that I was ready to write once more. And for short term writer blocks, I’ve found that doing puzzles or games helps—it engages the practical part of your brain, so that the creative side is free to come out. Have you ever noticed that you get good writing ideas at the worst times? In the shower, driving, having sex? Same principle.

I'm beset by the best ideas while I"m driving, as a matter of fact.  I carry a notebook with me so I can scribble them down as soon as the car stops.  As for during sex, I'll have to plead the fifth on that one! Tell us your latest news?

Well, Leo releases on April 30th. The sequel to my first published novel, To The Max, releases on June 4th, and I co-wrote a book with a fellow St. Louisan, S.L. Danielson, which should come out in October. It’s called My Fair Vampire, and it’s set during the 1904 World’s Fair. Other than that, I’m still writing Captivations, over at Wicked Nights, and my new series Forbidden comes out May 27th.

How did you come up with the title?

It was the first thing that my character said to me, I just knew it had to be the title. It intrigued me, and I hope it intrigues potential readers to look into the story.

Can you tell us about your main character?

Some might say that Fisher Roberts is uptight, he prefers the term no-nonsense. He’s a reporter for an online magazine, and writes articles on various topics, including the holidays, which he doesn’t like. He hates how much his best friend/roommate, Hunter Long, enjoys celebrating the holidays, especially Halloween. He and Hunters have been friends forever. Fisher has a little secret—he’s in love with Hunter, and has been for some time. He doesn’t dare tell him however. Once upon a time he had other dreams, but they got pushed aside after his father left them, when he was ten. He focused on journalism, instead, and forgot about the fiction which once fueled his imagination. Fisher just wants to get by the best way he can, and not lose his best friend in the process.

Who designed the cover?

The incredibly talented and wonderful Reese Dante

Reese does beautiful work.  Where can we purchase the book?

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I think that the message is to always believe in the beauty of your dreams. To feel that anything is possible, if you want it badly enough, and if you’re willing to work to get it.

How much of the book is realistic?

I think that is open to interpretation, and what you believe in.

Have you included a lot of your life experiences, even friends, in the plot?

In this case, no, I don’t think it includes any of my actual life experiences, per se, and none of the characters are thinly veiled friends.

How important do you think villains are in a story?

Villains push us to change the status quo and not remain complacent about ourselves. You have to watch out or do better or whatever. Villains keep us on our toes. Plus they can be a lot of fun. Today’s villains aren’t necessarily the villains of yesteryear.

What books have most influenced your life?

I’ve read Gone With the Wind 17 times; there is something about Scarlett’s story that is fascinating to me—the way she faced her life and handled her problems and never gave up in going after what she wanted. Desiree was the first book I ever cried over, and it showed me how history and fiction and romance could be wedded. Dracula introduced me to my love of vampire

Who is your favorite author and why?

There are so many authors that I love, it would be hard to name a favorite, so I’ll pick a few and elaborate on one: Jules Verne, Preston and Child, Agatha Christie, Patricia Cornwell, PG Wodehouse, Thomas Harris and Christopher Moore.  I read Moore’s Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal. I was skeptical going into it but he won me over and I fell in love with the book, and his writing. It resonated with me and with something I wrote. I just love it to death. Also, I’d like to give a special shout out to Thomas Harris for creating one of the most perfect characters ever, someday I’d like to have my own Hannibal Lecter.

What are your current writing projects now?

I have a few sequels to write – my Max series, my Dark Love series, Captivations and Forbidden, a sequel to Sex on the Beach Christmas Style, and the sequel to Leo as well, which I hope to be done in time for Christmas. Also I have a new book I’m working on called Cheatin’ Heart which is completely different, about a guy with a cynical outlook on love who opens a bar where fidelity is optional.

Are you reading any interesting books at the moment?

I’m reading Abigail’s Cottage by Margaret West and Condor One by John Simpson

How do you deal with rejection letters?

I accept them for what they are—one person’s opinion—and I move on. I don’t bother analyzing what happened, because most rejection slips are forms and don’t tell you anything as to why you were rejected. Sometimes it’s just the wrong place at the wrong time. I just look for someone else and try again.

Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest and why?

New to me or new to writing?  That isn’t necessarily the same thing.   Let’s go with both then, shall we?  That would be Gail Carriger. Her Soulless, Blameless and Changeless books are just incredible. Her characters are well written and not cliché, she takes familiar tropes and turns and twists them to her bidding, and her sex scenes, while not the most explicit are extremely hot nonetheless. I love that Alexa is not conventionally pretty, plus she’s strong and independent. And Lord Maccon is just damn hot.

What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out?

My advice is to read a lot, watch a lot of movies and TV series, and don’t be afraid of writing fanfiction. It’s a great learning tool. You learn to develop characters in your own way, dealing with familiar characters, and then work your way up to your own. Also, finding betas and a critique group is invaluable. You will be glad to have both in your life and in your writing.

Do you have any advice for writers?

Never give up your dream, despite the naysayers that surround you, or the people who tell you that what you write is wrong, and that you’ll never succeed. Believe in yourself first.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I love to read and watch movies, and I like to do Sudoku. Whenever I get the chance, I go to visit my daughter Katie in Indiana. I don’t have internet access there so I spend a couple of days actually relaxing and hanging out and not doing anything but having fun and talking to my daughters.

What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing?

Being published was always my biggest dream, that and having people tell me they like what I write. I’ve succeeded on both counts. Next I’d like to become self-sufficient in my writing.

If you could leave your readers with one bit of wisdom, what would you want it to be?

Arthur says it, in Leo, to Fisher – To thine own self be true. Yeah, it’s Shakespeare, he was quoting the bard. The point is that you are the best you possible, why would you want to be anyone else? We love you for who you are.

Blurb: Leonardo di Caprio is a Vampire
“Tis the night before Halloween, and Fisher Roberts wishes it was over, not being a fan of this or any other holiday.  But he tolerates it because his roommate/best friend Hunter Long takes a childish glee in all things Halloween.  And Fisher has a vested interest in keeping Hunter happy.  If only he could find the nerve to tell his childhood friend that he loves him, and has for a very long time.
Fisher thinks Hunter is carrying things a bit far this year, though.  First Hunter claims to be a vampire, and he just won’t let the silly joke go.  Then he forces Fisher to go to a costumed Halloween party which Fisher would rather avoid, especially when he realizes where it’s being held, and whose house it is. Things at Fisher’s job might just be going south, too, when he receives a mysterious summons to report to the editor’s office the next morning.  And then Fisher goes and does something stupid—like kissing Hunter!
Bad leads to worse when Fisher ends up at the Halloween party from Hell, and he learns something that threatens to destroy his and Hunter’s relationship forever.  Running from his fears, Fisher encounters a strange young man with an unusual resemblance to Leonardo di Caprio, who shows him things he never realized before, truths about his life and the people in it.
Can Fisher find his way back to Hunter, and can he find the courage to do what his heart wishes?

Excerpt:  Leonardo di Caprio is a Vampire
“Did you know that Leonardo di Caprio is a vampire?”
Fisher Roberts stopped in mid-chew of a mouthful of fibrous cereal to cast a wary, disbelieving glance at his best friend and roommate Hunter Long on the other side of the table.  Wary, because he wondered what in the world Hunter was going on about so early in the morning.  Disbelieving, because he only had so much time for breakfast before he had to get going to work, and he had a bad feeling that Hunter was trying to eat into that time.  Why he wanted to do that was beyond Fisher.  Of course, a lot of things about his roommate were beyond Fisher, despite the fact that they’d been friends since they were—well, too young to actually remember how long they’d known each other.  But for as long as Fisher could remember, he and Hunter had been best buddies.  And he’d learned over the years that, with Hunter, longevity did not equate to knowledge-ability, far from it.
Now, Fisher could react in one of two ways.  He could ignore his roommate and keep eating.  Pretend he’d heard nothing.  But from past experience, that would only cause Hunter’s performance to escalate.  Which would entail taking more time to decipher what he was saying, and in the process make Fisher even later to work.   Or he could simply bow down to the inevitable and give in by asking him the question he was doubtless waiting to hear.  Even if it brought about that smug smirk he was so fond of wearing.
Fisher finished chewing, swallowed, and managed not to roll his eyes as he reached for his juice to kill off what was left in the glass.  Waste not, want not.  “What do you mean?”
Hunter Long might be six foot two and possessed of a body that many a male model would kill for—at least that’s what Fisher heard the girls who flocked around him say—with the palest of blue eyes that twinkled all the time, and a smile that could and did light up a room.  But honestly, he had the capacity to be an overgrown child at times, and this was one of those times.  Fisher chalked it up to it being that time of year.
“Well,” Hunter replied, “look at him, going on forty, and he looks just like he did what, fifteen years ago?  It only stands to reason he must be a vampire.  They never age, you know.  I mean take a look at us.  We’re almost his age, but over the years we’ll grow up to be little old men and he’ll still be playing sweet baby-faced guys even when he’s collecting social security, know what I mean?”
“There are no such things as vampires,” Fisher made his typical logical reply, “and just because it’s Halloween tomorrow night, and you’ve got the house all decorated for it, doesn’t mean you have to bring it to the table.  Know what I mean?”  He arched a no-nonsense brow at the other man.  This was not Fisher’s favorite time of year.  Neither was Christmas, come to think of it.  Or any other holiday.  Ironic that he should write articles for a living that meant he was forced to expound on such seasonal topics for Midwest Home and Fantasy, a regional online magazine with a growing fan-base, when he had no real interest in them himself, being a practical, no-nonsense kind of a guy.
“I’m a vampire.” Hunter smiled, leaning across the table toward Fisher.  “Want to see my fangs?”
